GORDO, Ala. — A photo in a Facebook post deemed racially insensitive that sparked an outrage in the community and resulted in the cancelation of the 101st edition of one of Alabama high school football's greatest rivalries originated not from a Gordo High School dress-up day, as the principal indicated in a statement, but rather came from the website of a faith-based camp more than 1,000 miles away, The Tuscaloosa News has learned.
Gordo was scheduled to host Pickens County, its rival located 8 miles down the same country highway in rural West Alabama, on Friday, Sept. 26. The game was canceled after an uproar over a game-week post on the Gordo V Cheer program's Facebook account.
The Tuscaloosa News obtained a screenshot of the Facebook post, which was was deleted from the Gordo cheer page in the wake of reaction by some community members, and matched it to the image on the camp's website.
The Tuscaloosa News has also verified that the same image was previously posted to the Gordo cheer page July 29 and was still visible on the site as of Friday morning.
The photo, which sparked the uproar that led to the cancelation of the 100-year-old “8 Mile War” rivalry game, is identical to an image from the website of Camp Luther, a faith-based camp in Wisconsin. The website says the photo is of college student summer staffers.
There are no known ties between anyone at Gordo and the camp. Camp Luther officials did not respond to a request for comment.
Principal Jeff Campbell indicated in a letter to community members this week that the image was of Gordo High School students. Campbell described the picture as coming from a “dress-up day at GHS.” The photo was used in a post promoting a safari theme for the game against Pickens County.
Campbell did not respond to repeated requests for comment on the origin of the photo or how it ended up being selected for use on the Gordo cheer site.
The Gordo cheer Facebook post showed young people in safari clothing, some holding stuffed monkeys and bananas, with the words “TAME THE TORNADOES!” across the top. Pickens County athletics uses Tornadoes for its teams.
According to the 2020 U.S. Census, Gordo’s population of 4,428 was 76.7% white (3,398) and 17.7% Black or African American (785). In Reform, where Pickens County High School is located, 61.3% of the 3,172 residents identified as white (1,943) and 34.6% as Black or African American (1,096).
"When we're referred to as a monkey, we feel like you're referring to us as an animal," Frazier added. "... Referring to us as a monkey makes us feel like we're not as equal class of you, and we're not on the same playing field. So, we feel like you're depicting us in a negative connotation and feel like you're more superior than us, we're beneath you. And this relates all the way back to slavery days."
So the kids are taught to be offended, invent racism where it isn’t there, and play the victim card.
Exactly

Blacks seem to look for excuses to be offended.
I’m offended that you are offended.
I’m offended that you are NOT offended.
I’m just offended. All. Of. The. Time.
Always on the lookout for something to be offended by.
Like Serena Williams who got the vapors when she saw a decorative display of cotton plants in a hotel.
I’m offended that you are offended.
I’m offended that you are NOT offended.
I’m just offended. All. Of. The. Time.
Because who wears roller skates on steps?
Nothing in there about people who identify as bananas being offended?
I count 2 monkeys 5 bananas and one “Jesus loves you”.
I’m trying to figure who this “Fraizer” race-incubator that the writer quoted is.
The perpetually offended will never let racism die.
There is also a monkey on a t-shirt. Missed that. So that makes 3 monkeys. That crosses the line at close to 10% monkeyness.
Today, masquerading as a race victim is just good business. Until it isn't.
Well, if someone was holding a slice of watermelon, then...
Love the Jane Goodall costume!!
...smart girl!
A bunch of kids having some sort of fun with a jungle/animal theme display.
If someone got offended, that’s on them, yes?
Liberals oppose truth.
That’s it. Look at the guy with the beard. All of them.
Clearly college+ aged.
The supply of racism isn’t as high as the demand.
This is going way out to find “offense.” Someone was looking to cancel the game and this was wisted and “interpreted” way out of shape in order to cancel the game.
Flamingos, tigers, ducks, bananas, monkeys, leopards, and elves are racially insensitive. Of course. Slavery, don’cha know..
