The Philadelphia Flyers and Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Bernie Parent, a true legend, one of the most famous and beloved players, and most popular figures in the history of the organization and city of Philadelphia.
Bernard Marcel Parent was an original Flyer.
He delivered the club's two Stanley Cup Championships in 1974 and 1975, both of which culminated in a dominant and flawless performance in the clinching game of each series with a pair of shutout victories and earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the playoffs.
His career as Flyer would also see him win two Vezina Trophies as the best goaltender in the NHL in 1974 and 1975. He is the first Flyer to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984, and is one of six players on the Flyers to have his No. 1 retired to the rafters in addition to being inducted into the inaugural class of the Flyers Hall of Fame in 1988.
The legend of Bernie Parent reached far beyond the ice and his accolades. Bernie had a deep love for Philadelphia and fans of the Flyers. He was passionate about his role as an ambassador for Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education and inspired an entire generation of hockey fans. He dedicated his time, energy and enthusiasm to not only grow the game, but also to spread joy to anyone he encountered.
Anyone who had the pleasure of being around Bernie always walked away with a smile. He will be dearly missed. We offer our condolences to his beloved wife, Gini, and the entire Parent family.
In lieu of flowers, Bernie's family has kindly requested donations be made to Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education.

As was said by Flyers fans, only the Lord saved more than Parent.
He will be remembered for his Vezina Trophies and Stanley Cup victories, and charitable contributions in the greater Philadelphia Delaware Valley. His career was cut short by an eye injury likely prevented by today's improved goal tender masks.

Montreal net minder in that era - Ken Dryden, another great of the game, passed away just 2 weeks ago. Bernie Parent was the better of the two, IMHO, but I bled Orange and Black.
RIP Bernie. Thanks for the memories.

Dryden won five Vezinas, but four of those were after Parent suffered a neck injury that sent him to the bench. Alas! We are all mortal, but Parent was incredible in the 1973–74 and 1974–75 seasons.

He came to Philly, stayed and put down roots. He had an incredible sense of humor. It was great to be in the same room with him.

I met an older guy who told me that Bernie was the last of his Philly sports heroes to pass. The others on his list were Jim Bunning, Johnny Callison, Wilt Chamberlain, and Eagles running back Timmy Brown.

From the NHL's post on Bernie's passing:
"Parent played the next two seasons in a zone the likes of which had rarely been seen in NHL history. He played 73 of the Flyers' 78 regular-season games in 1973-74 and set the NHL single-season record for wins (47) that stood for more than three decades. He also led the NHL with a 1.89 goals-against average and 12 shutouts. Parent then went 12-5 in the playoffs, including a 1-0 victory against the Boston Boston in Game 6 of the Final that brought the Stanley Cup to Philadelphia.
There was no Cup hangover for Parent in 1974-75. He won 44 games, 12 by shutout, and finished with a 2.03 GAA. Parent was even better in the playoffs, going 10-5 with a 1.89 GAA and four shutouts, including a 2-0 victory against the Buffalo Sabres in Game 6 of the Final that wrapped up the Flyers’ second straight championship."
