France's richest man, LVMH's Arnault, slams proposed billionaire tax

PARIS, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Bernard Arnault, the boss of luxury goods group LVMH and France's richest man, has attacked a proposed 2% tax on billionaires as an assault on France's economy and denounced the plan's architect as a far-left ideologue.

The tax, which would target wealth above 100 million euros ($117 million), has gained political traction in France, where Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu faces pressure from the Socialist Party to include it in the 2026 budget or face a confidence vote that could topple his government.

He accused the plan's architect, economist Gabriel Zucman of being "first and foremost a far-left activist" who uses "pseudo-academic competence" to promote an ideology aimed at dismantling the liberal economic system, which Arnault described as "the only one that works for the good of all”.

Zucman, a professor at France’s École Normale Supérieure and the University of California, Berkeley, rejected the accusations.

"I've never been an activist for any movement or party," he said on X, adding his work was grounded in research, not ideology.

Zucman was among 300 economists who publicly backed the economic platform of the left-wing Nouveau Front Populaire alliance ahead of last year's legislative elections.

The tax has broad public support, with an Ifop poll commissioned by the Socialist Party this month showing 86% approval.

Hopefully the guy has already got several other homes elsewhere around the world—and is ready to bail on France at a moment’s notice.

That’s the problem with taxing the ultra wealthy…they are also ultra mobile.

Loved this clip:

Meanwhile, back in the caliphate:

"Although the so-called Islamic State has lost its physical Caliphate after it was defeated under the first Trump administration, ISIS radicals continue to advocate for their strict interpretation of the Islamic religion and seek to influence impressionable young Muslims in the West to commit acts of terror in its name.

"In a copy of its al-Naba obtained by the Centre for the Analysis of Terrorism (CAT) and shared with the French paper of record Le Figaro, ISIS wrote: 'O monotheistic Muslims… Hit Jews and Christians, their crowds and convoys, in the streets and on the roads of America and Europe, and especially in France. Do not spare them, attack them, kill them by all means: by car, with a knife, a gun or by causing a fire.'

" 'Know that every disbeliever you kill makes them suffer more than our strikes can do here… Hit them in solitary attacks like those we have seen before in Paris, Brussels and other places in the countries of the Crusader'."

Anyone for returning to W's and then Obama's and then Biden's "religion of peace" stuff?

It is my choice whether my company creates or maintains jobs in France. They could go to Slovakia, or maybe in a few years to Ukraine. Consider the amount of worker income and social security taxes you collect.

People make stupid statements about such wealthy people, like: “Bezos should give his wealth to the poor.” Brilliant! A “give-a-fish, teach-how-to-fish” teachable moment. Bezos has been a millionaire for over a decade. Back then, he could have bought a yacht and sailed around the world eating bon-bons. Instead, he plowed the profits back into the business to the point where 250,000+ people, are fed, clothed, and sheltered by the jobs he created. Where would those people be now if someone taxed his wealth away? How many of you were hired by a poor person? Like it or not, it is the rich people who invest in the economy, create new jobs, promote economic growth that is the engine for a rising standard of living. Instead of castigating the group who have provided your current standard of living, you want to kill the goose that continues to lay golden eggs.

Idiots...

—”I NEVER HAD A PAYCHECK THAT WAS SIGNED BY A POOR PERSON .”

NICE! I’ll borrow it if I can remember when needed.

That said, I’ve had many checks signed by people who are cash-poor.

I was offered a partnership buy-in with two friends’ start-up, but was too chicken to put it all on the line, plus untold hours. But worked for them as a salaryman for many, many years.

The two partners and thier wives worked worked day and night
for years, and I knew that they had few draws and a slight salary, THEY WERE POOR, and signing my checks!

They did catch up.
Last year, they did $50m and sold out.
