Estonia has requested a consultation with other Nato members after Russian warplanes violated its airspace on Friday.
Estonia's foreign ministry condemned the incursion as "brazen". It said three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered the Estonian skies "without permission and remained there for a total of 12 minutes" over the Gulf of Finland.
A Nato spokesperson said the military alliance "responded immediately and intercepted the Russian aircraft", calling it "yet another example of reckless Russian behaviour and Nato's ability to respond".
Italian jets responded to the incursion under Nato's mission to bolster its eastern flank, while Finland and Sweden also scrambled jets. Russia has not commented.

He is trying to keep NATO countries from sending their air defense assets to Ukraine by creating the idea he will attack them from the air. What happens is the voters feel threatened and will lobby their politicians to keep the air defenses at home. If they don’t do that the opposition candidates will criticize them, and it could lead to an election loss. There’s not a lot of testosterone in Europe these days.

One theory is Ukraine may be launching drones against Russian oil refineries from other territories (or the sea) closer to Northern Russia (ie. the Baltics) , as some of those sites that have been hit, particularly in the North, are considered to be far outside Ukraine capabilities.

I’m guessing Russia’s motive is to show NATO they CAN strike them effectively since most of their air defense is in Ukraine, Romania and Poland.

It’s a shame that Ukraine focused on Russian targets in Russia and not the Russian targets inside Ukraine. If they did, they may not have been in Ukraine today.

People-remember the Yom Kipper war ‘73? Soviets were ready to get involved directly and Nixon/Kissinger put us on world wide alert. What we need is for one of our minor allies like this one to shoot down one of the intruders-downed plane in Estonian territory. Then dare Vlad to respond. If the Philippines shot at a Chicom fishing boat/spy trawler would they respond knowing Trump is in the WH?
