Trump announces he's suing the New York Times in astonishing $15B defamation lawsuit
Daily Mail ^

President Donald Trump is suing The New York Times for $15 billion for defamation and libel.

In a late night post on Monday, the president described the publication as 'one of the worst and most degenerate newspapers in the History of our Country.'

He described the lawsuit as a 'great honor' and accused the prestigious paper of becoming a 'virtual mouthpiece for the Radical Left Democrat Party.'

Trump's announcement comes days after the newspaper released articles on his ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

He had threatened last week to sue The New York Times for its reporting related to a sexually suggestive note and drawing given to Epstein decades ago.

Trump said he views The New York Times as 'the single largest illegal Campaign contribution, EVER.

'Their Endorsement of Kamala Harris was actually put dead center on the front page of The New York Times, something heretofore UNHEARD OF!

'The “Times” has engaged in a decades long method of lying about your Favorite President (ME!), my family, business, the America First Movement, MAGA, and our Nation as a whole.

Be fun if Trump owned the NYT.

Kirk's widow should sue Stephen King for $1 billion. Yes, he apologized and took it down but... be nice for her to own King's books so the money wouldn't go to some liberal organization when he dies.

I hope Trump also sues Rosie O’Donnell out of existence for the horribly false statements she made about him — basically called him a convicted child rapist.

Trump owning the NYT sounds like he LOST the lawsuit.

He’d fire the entire staff and turn the NYT it into a MAGA-phone.

Or just close it. Valuable real estate.

You can be sure that the ownership of the real estate is under a different corporate entity than the media company.

“””Trump said he views The New York Times as ‘the single largest illegal Campaign contribution, EVER. “””””

They have gotten by with for decades because no Republican has ever stood up to them. They are about to find out what a battle is like.

You can read Trump’s actual complaint here:
https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.flmd.447437/gov.uscourts.flmd.447437.1.0.pdf

I didn’t read all 156 paragraphs spread over 85 pages. From skimming, though, my impression is that Trump will have a tough time satisfying the high standard for defamation suits by a public figure.

His other problem is the rule that expressions of opinion are not actionable. He’s upset that the Times endorsed Kamala Harris and that the endorsement was “published, on the front page, highlighted in a location never seen before....” (paragraph 4). Ask yourself if Harris has a basis for a lawsuit against every paper that endorsed Trump.

Trump doesn’t expect to get $15 billion or even one penny. His lawyers have probably told him that the case will likely be dismissed on motion, without ever going to trial. What’s actually going on is that Trump is a master of manipulating the media. His lengthy complaint will be another step in getting his point of view out there. That will be enough to make the filing a success. Just don’t expect anything more.

His apology and retraction moots the possibility of a lawsuit. That’s why he did it.

“His apology and retraction moots the possibility of a lawsuit. That’s why he did it.”

Sorry, you lost me. Who apologized and what did he retract?

And, side note, why does the FR spell checker flag “moots”? Perfectly good word.

Steven King made a quite thorough apology and retraction, so thorough, I’m sure his lawyer wrote it for him because King’s original post was libelous.

Also on “moots”. Obviously, our vocabulary is bigger than spellchecks.

I remember when spellcheck first came out, it had an “add to vocabulary” function. This was even before the internet.

Not a fan of a person in political power being able to sue private organizations. Being in politics they are expected to roll with it in regards to verbal attacks.
