Republicans jammed through a change to Senate rules on Thursday that will allow them to more quickly confirm many of President Donald Trump’s nominees.
The move came over the objections of Democrats after bipartisan negotiations collapsed. The rules change will allow nominees to be considered en bloc, or as a group, as tensions have grown over several months between the two parties over the backlog of President Donald Trump’s nominees awaiting Senate confirmation. The vote was 45-53.
Bipartisan negotiators worked furiously Thursday to reach an agreement that would head off Republicans from using the so-called nuclear option to allow the GOP to more quickly confirm Trump nominees. The deal ultimately fell apart when they were unable to get all senators to agree to move on to a new, negotiated rules change on Thursday.
Democrats argued that negotiations collapsed because Republicans were rushing, rather than wait for the negotiated proposal to be ready early next week.
“This would buy us the time we need and not cost the leader anything,” said Senate Democratic Deputy Whip Brian Schatz.
“I am legitimately shocked that we are 94% of the way there” and not moving forward, he added, noting he was “deeply disappointed.”
Republican Sen. James Lankford acknowledged there wasn’t enough trust between the two sides to wait any longer, and a fired-up Senate Majority Leader John Thune demanded of Democrats, “How much time is enough?”

Did somebody get a set of balls for Christmas?
Remember what El Rush-Bo always pointed out. To the democRATS and DemoKKKrats, "bipartisan" means caving and agreeing with the Left.
It has been nine months! Every nominee should have had an up or down vote by now.
Maybe medical science has finally perfected testicular and spinal transplants for GOP Senators.
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.
Maybe they finally realized they will be hated by the left because the are republicans, no matter what senators do. So, they might as well do the right thing.
Lets pretend that Democrats don’t exist. The party in power should just do everything and anything they can.
it took an assassination to do this?
The Democrats almost went nuclear a couple years ago but Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin refused to get rid of the filibuster.
Democrats argued that negotiations collapsed because Republicans were rushing, rather than wait for the negotiated proposal to be ready early next week.
The Republicans have waited 7 months. It was time to break up the Democrat log jam.
Dedicated to Charlie Kirk! (I hope)
Why? Damn it, you have a mandate.
I only wish there was a solid way to vet potential judges for president Trump’s appointments. So many are closet democrats.
The plus - it will help the GOP with Trump’s nominees now and is apparently the only way to get past the untraditional stall tactic Schumer is using. I do not doubt I’d do the same thing as Thune is doing at this point.
The con - if they get the chance with their own Senate Majority the Dims will turn the rule change back on the GOP.
Might as well.
We are quickly approaching the point where a simple majority for almost all Senate action is all that will be required.
Can also see blue-slips going away.
About time. Why negotiate with evil?
I detest John Thune.
