1) They were at war with each other before WWII. Mostly because Chiang killed Mao’s wife.
2)The US provided more support to Chiang during the 1945-1949 civil war than they had provided during WWII. So, no, Mao didn’t win that civil war because he had Soviet support and Chiang had nothing. Chiang had plenty. What he did not have was the support of the people.
3) When Chiang fled for Taiwan, he took the gold in the national Treasury. It belonged to China, not Chiang and not Taiwan. But he stole it. Then almost immediately he gave half of it to his Chinese, but American raised, wife (grew up in southern US) and she used it to buy estates and then invite Congressmen there to be bribed. This gold theft was largely the cause of the early years poverty, not communism.
4) The Congress bribery was largely to prevent mainland China from having China’s Security Council seat. It got ridiculous. The mainland developed and exploded nuclear weapons, but the UN Security Council seat was kept with Taiwan.
5) Taiwan was Japanese. China ceded Taiwan to Japan in a war 50 years earlier. When Chiang and his officers arrived they found the Japanese culture was dominant throughout the populace, after 50 years. Chiang and his officers then brutalized the locals, mostly because of this Japanese default. Chiang’s people confiscated the best land and took over the government. And killed the previous people in government.
So the Taiwan govt is largely the offspring of those animals that bribed their way to favorable US policy.

Many times in the past, evil people have been overconfident, launched attacks on what they believed would be easy targets, and have ultimately paid with their lives with their countries largely destroyed.
I’m sure Putin, Xi and the rest of them have been tempted to strike what used to be known as the West, or the free world (people reading this will understand why I place that in the past tense given the wild card of globalism). But they are deterred by mutual assured destruction — without that I am fairly sure China would have gone for Taiwan and Russia would have been far more aggressive even in this post-Soviet age. And they would have been reduced to rubble within days.
Of course we also would have seen enormous devastation in their first strikes, potentially. It’s hard to know in relative terms how far ahead we would have come out, but I can’t see any scenario where we would be behind after a full nuclear exchange.
We would be starting again, in many ways, but they would be finished and under the boots of occupation forces like Germany and Japan for ten years or longer; whatever remained of their population would be subjected to the same strong incentives to align themselves with us, although it would not be an identical situation to 1945-55.
Instead of that, we are just going to be living in this world of threats and counter-threats, Putin rolled the dice on his invasion of eastern Ukraine and got away with it, but that has not necessarily conveyed a message to all concerned that more misadventures will be tolerated. I am sure behind the scenes a message has been sent, cross a certain red line and you will not be left alone. They may think to themselves, probably they are bluffing, we could cross that line too, and the one after that. But as with Hitler in 1935 to 1939, there were red lines not enforced, and then later there were red lines that were enforced. He did not have the intelligence to realize that even his best efforts would be doomed to ultimate failure. Let’s hope Putin and Xi (and their attack dog in NK) have that sense and just restrict themselves to displays of power and big talk. Same goes for Iran who were not necessarily part of this round.

It is time for China to stop lame bot campaign that calls any weapon system announced but not shown (aim-260 missile, F-47) a lie and we would surely show it if we had it. Like we never had anything secret until we actually used it or the B-21 in recent memory was shown in 3D mock ups before video of it flying.
