Informant might be an overstatement, but it’s been known for a long time that he was a cooperative witness willing to tell them what he knew.
Johnson is either conflating the term ‘informant’ or he doesn’t know what he is talking about. An informant in a confidential source for information that is also paid for his/her assistance.
