Defective vaccine batches: A short time after the successful Salk vaccine was introduced, the California-based Cutter Laboratories released batches of its vaccine that had not been properly treated with formaldehyde. Proteins in the mixture had clumped together, protecting some of the live virus from being killed.
Contamination discovered: The contamination was uncovered after reports emerged of vaccinated children developing polio, sometimes in the same limb where the injection was given.
Tragic consequences:
Around 120,000 children were vaccinated with Cutter’s flawed product.
An estimated 40,000 children developed “abortive” polio (a mild form of the disease).
56 children suffered paralytic polio.
Five children died.
An additional 113 people were paralyzed and five died after contracting the virus from a recently vaccinated child.”

Also, the Jonas Salk polio vaccine, first distributed in 1955, was grown in living monkey kidney cells. This method was used to rapidly produce large quantities of the virus needed for the vaccine, which was then killed and inactivated with formaldehyde before injection.
During this period, the vaccine was unintentionally contaminated with SV40, a virus that is harmless to monkeys but was discovered to exist in these cell cultures.
Researchers discovered in 1960 that some polio vaccine batches were contaminated with the SV40 virus, which was present in the monkey cells.
While SV40 can cause cancer in animals, studies have found no causal link between SV40-contaminated vaccines and cancer in humans, and the general scientific consensus is reassuring on this matter.
