A Romanian national is facing theft-related charges after allegedly using an ATM scam known as "cash trapping" to steal from victims in North Texas, according to Plano police.
The suspect, identified as Ionut Aurel Iova, is accused of installing devices that blocked cash from dispensing during withdrawals.
Authorities say he returned later to retrieve the trapped money, leaving victims, including an elderly person, to assume the ATM had simply malfunctioned.
"Believing the ATM is malfunctioning, victims typically leave to report the issue or find a different ATM," Plano police said in a news release Tuesday. "The criminals then return to remove the blocking device and collect the trapped currency."

A “Romanian” man? Not a Texas, nor Plano man?
“Diversity is our strength” bites us on the arse again.
A Romanian national = Gypsy
> A “Romanian” man? <
Many folks so identified in the media are actually gypsies. I’m not saying it’s true here. But it is a possibility.
What should someone do instead? Call the bank 800 number and wait for someone to come out and fix it?
Have to go back to using the teller during business hours, I guess. We can’t have nice things. Hopefully this guy goes to prison for 30 years, but I doubt that will happen.
LOL. Exactly. See-BS isn’t giving us the relevant information - he is a caring father and a good son who calls his mother every week. He’s hard working and just struggling to get ahead in life. The ATM scam? That’s just a distraction from the REAL story of how this is another migrant success story.
Thanks for the link. I’m sure it has the answers I seek!!!
..... FIRING SQUADS!

If you know about the device/scam, the right thing to do would be to call the police.
The immoral (and risky) thing to do would be to break the trap and take the cash.
Aren’t there supposed to be cameras on ATMs?
That is ONE REASON we quit using ATMs 30+ years ago..................
If you break the device and take the cash and return any that is not yours to the bank so they can make their customers whole is not immoral. Risky, yes. But not immoral.
“Romanian” is the woke term for Gypsy.
I just about all the time use the ATM during banking hours, and close to the entrance so I don’t have to travel away from the bad ATM . I use ATM inside the bank office if there is one.
But yes, we have become so dependant on machines, and their constant malfunctioning, and vulnerability to tampering is a real bad problem.
True.
That is an acceptable solution, at least on a moral level.
It would be rewarding to know that the criminals did not receive the fruits of their ill-gotten works.
But as long as you didn’t keep them for yourself, and the bank had the chance to get them back to the people whom they were intended, it is a win all around.
I am also loathe to use credit cards at gas pumps for the same reasons. But I also don’t carry a lot of cash so I have little choice but to use them. I inspect the seal on the pumps and if it’s broken, missing or even scratched I will go elsewhere........................
“Romanian national ... identified as Ionut Aurel Iova”
IOW, a Gypsy, doing what Gypsys do best: stealing ...
Was the device mounted external or internal in the ATM?
It sounds like it was internal, because the trapped cash was stored internal.
So how did the thief get into the ATM?
And what can the ATM owner do to monitor for modifications?
