Trump weighs sending troops to New Orleans in first red state crime deployment
Washington Examiner ^ | September 3, 2025 2:11 pm | Mabinty Quarshie

President Donald Trump teased sending federal troops to New Orleans in addition to Chicago, marking his first time publicly threatening to send troops to a red state after he militarized Washington, D.C.’s, police force.

“We’re making a determination now, do we go to Chicago, or … do we go to a place like New Orleans, where we have a great governor, Jeff Landry, who wants us to come in and straighten out a very nice section of this country that’s become quite, you know, quite tough, quite bad,” Trump told reporters during a Wednesday bilateral meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki.

Trump escalated his yearslong battle with Democratic mayors and governors by threatening to deploy the National Guard to cities with high crime rates after his takeover of the district’s police force.

He has specifically blasted Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL), Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass as incompetent leaders who cannot alleviate the crime in their cities and states.

However, Trump’s comments on Wednesday suggested he could deploy forces to Louisiana, led by Gov. Jeff Landry (R). Louisiana is home to eight of the top 10 cities with the highest murder rates in 2024, with populations of at least 100,000, according to FBI data.

Shreveport, Louisiana, has the 10th highest murder rate of any city in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more. New Orleans is not among the top 20 highest murder rate cities, but it is helmed by Democratic Mayor LaToya Cantrell, while Shreveport is led by Republican Mayor Tom Arceneaux.

I still don't agree that this is a federal problem. Local law enforcement is the responsibility of the city, or perhaps the state. Not the feds.

I don't believe Trump grasps the full implications of the feds taking responsibility for local law enforcement.

How is it the news hasn't figured out yet that PDJT is sending help to cities and not states?

As I figure this I consider history.

In Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 the US Army pushed segregationists back from Central High School by poking them with bayonets as in knives mounted on rifles.

Live ammunition was in the rifles when the National Guard was at Kent State in Ohio May 4, 1970.

And that live ammo was used killing four antiwar protesters.

Watching people in military uniforms holding riot shields or collecting trash pales in comparison with historical use of the National Guard and US Army.

Is this a show for the cameras?

I’d pick St. Louis because of its horrible murder rate in a conservative State.

New Orleans was a high crime city in the 1980’s when I was a young man visiting then...

Do people have the right to be safe if the ruling class refuses to do anything about it?

Blue city. The red state is not the issue.

St. Louis was a big city in the 70’s with over 750,000 people, now less than 280,000. It is a dying crime infested hellhole.

Memphis now has more than double population of St Louis but is also a crime infested hellhole.

What do they have in common? What could be the problem?

In Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957 the US Army pushed segregationists back from Central High School by poking them with bayonets as in knives mounted on rifles.

That was federalized National Guard troops enforcing federal law prohibiting racial discrimination by states. Again, perfectly appropriate.

Live ammunition was in the rifles when the National Guard was at Kent State in Ohio May 4, 1970. And that live ammo was used killing four antiwar protesters.

That was National Guard activated by the Governor of Ohio under state law, not the President using federalized troops. So that was state troops enforcing state law. Perfectly appropriate.

What Trump is proposing here is federal troops enforcing state laws against ordinary crime. That's not appropriate.

Watching people in military uniforms holding riot shields or collecting trash pales in comparison with historical use of the National Guard and US Army.

If those federal troops are simply protecting federal personnel or property, that's fine. But that's not what is being talked about in Chicago, etc..

Have to reluctantly agree.

The citizens are getting the government they voted for.

Yes.

And the longer term problem is that those cities are going to hit a fiscal death spiral when their pension obligations to public employees can no longer be supported by the remaining tax base. When that happens, they're going to look for bailouts.

So I am really reluctant for the feds to start assuming the responsibility to provide normal law enforcement services in cities. A hard line should exist that local law enforcement is the responsibility of the city, or perhaps the state in question depending on the state constitution.

But not the feds under any circumstances.

I agree completely. However it's my understanding that federal agents, ICE, DEA, ATF et al are making arrests in coordination with local law enforcement, which imo is fine. They're dealing with violations of federal law. I'm not ecstatic having national guard there without rioting, however they're not making arrests. They're said to be backing up federal law enforcement with their presence. Again not crazy about that, but doubt it's a violation of anything.

And if Chicago doesn't want help, help the cities who welcome it. Pritzger and Johnson don't seem to care much, despite the fact that around 95% of the victims are black or Hispanic.

We need El Salvadorian-style prisons. No repeat offenders. No gang control over anything. No weight lifting. Very little protein in diets. Solitary confinement includes no light.

All you get is Bible study.

IV. iv.

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

I’d say either the state legislature or the Governor has to request assistance.

The citizens are getting the government they voted for.

Citizens who vote have nothing to do with it. At least their votes mean nothing.

Democrat politicians are getting the "votes" they pay criminal gangs to harvest. That has been the "Chicago Way" for the last 150 years.

Citizens get the government they tolerate. We are well beyond the point where this can be fixed by "elections".
