WASHINGTON (7News) — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Council Chairman Phil Mendelson on Wednesday announced a new collective bargaining agreement with the DC Fraternal Order of Police Union, including a 13% pay increase for officers, sergeants, lieutenants and above beginning Oct. 1.
Bowser said the agreement is part of a broader strategy to recruit, retain and support officers at a time when the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has seen its sworn ranks shrink.
These initiatives include:
Expanding the MPD take-home vehicle policy by adding 100 vehicles for officers who are District residents which benefits neighborhoods by seeing a visible MPD presence in their community; and
Through a Statement of Administration Policy, announcing support for the implementation of DROP, the removal of the mandatory retirement age, and an expansion of the Senior Police Officer program to include lieutenants through emergency legislation.
The mayor said that MPD currently has about 3,180 officers, adding that her goal is to return the department to 4,000 officers.

If they can get any.
Florida has been offering relocation bonuses for over a year now......the smart ones are more than likely already here.

New police hires should meet stringent standards to ensure they are willing and capable of doing dangerous law enforcement work.
It appears from video evidence that many in the police ranks today are hired with DEI foremost.
so, reversing the ‘defund’ movement.
That sounds like a fulfillment of a requirement to me.
A while back I watched a video of some guy talking to two young NYPD officers on a sidewalk. The cops were pleasant enough. Both they both talked as if they were mentally challenged.
It was actually a little disturbing.
But I suppose these days the NYPD has to take what they can get.
The 13% pay raise will likely result in increased FOP membership dues for the leaders to pad their bank accounts and dole out to their friends.
I kinda saw the same thing in the Florida DOC facilities I was in with my church’s prison ministry.
Lots of obesity among prison guards, male AND female.
Some of them didn’t look like they could control an inmate if their life depended on it .
I guess that’s what you get for $35k a year.
This is an attempt to regain the political initiative without doing what needs to be done: fix the laws.
but there is no crime problem
Agreed. Hitting your hiring goals by hiring unqualified people for police work is more dangerous than having too few officers.
What is their current salary?
I can't wait for the picture of a cruiser up on cement blocks :)
