Far-right Azov quietly grew to tens of thousands in Ukraine military

The expansion of this influential formation, which is accused of harboring extremist ideologies, will have an impact on any future peace deal

Over the last several weeks, Russia’s 51st Combined Arms Army has achieved a penetration of the Ukrainian defenses northeast of Pokrovsk, seeking to isolate the Ukrainian forces defending the city.

To seal off the penetration, Ukrainian forces committed a large number of formations, spearheaded by the 1st “Azov” National Guard Corps.

While the results of fighting are still uncertain at the time of this writing, the presence of an entire “Azov” Corps and its sister Corps in the regular army has come as a surprise to many observers. Most remember it as a single regiment of about 1000 men and are shocked to find it has grown into two multi-brigade structures of over 20,000-40,000 soldiers each. The growth and far-right leaning of this formation could have an impact on the future of any Ukraine peace deal.

The Azov militia battalion was founded by Andriy Biletskyi, whom many have accused of harboring white supremacists views. At one point it was prohibited from receiving U.S. aid by Congress for its extremist views, The unit earned a reputation for battlefield success for its capture of Mariupol (on the Sea of Azov, from which it takes its name) in early 2014 from Donbas separatists.

Ironically, at the time its reputation may have been exaggerated. There are few videos of actual combat and the unit’s first fatality came a month later during battle for Marinka. This may have been the result of an excellent public relations program that Azov established early on.

Are the cops and firemen looking into other employment in other states? Perhaps the red states should be advertising for them this time in the election cycle. Let them pull the resign trigger November 5 and quit the day before he takes office.

Wrong, it says the guy who founded it was accused of having white supremacist views.

So you have a 20k strong military force but we should worry about who founded it when they had a few hundred.

the small number of Azov radicals from Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk now define, for the existing Ukraine Government, and whatever population remains, what “nationalism” should mean.

They were given that power by the UK/Brussels and NATO who assisted their rise.

Nationalist Democratic socialists, Democratic Socialists, Communist Democratic Socialists have one thing in common………SOCIALISM…go figure.

They are left wing nuts. They ALWAYS declare war and attempt to destroy Constitutional Republics. When they succeed, the people cannot vote themselves free, and the suffering increases. Never go willingly into Socialism because it always end badly. They always end up with an elite ruling class of “Some socialists more equal than others”.

Do the same thing over and over is a sign of insanity…… or Socialists who promise it will be different next time.

I’d be curious to know what a “far-right” military organization looks like in a static warfare environment.

But then I’d have to hear a lot of garbage from fanbois of both sides about how some resistance group is good/bad/whatever.

Don’t care anymore - no more funding without exposure of pre-war corruption involving US politicians and flunkies.

Actually, they're not. The Russians used a fast, light infantry assault to infiltrate past the Ukrainian's second defense line. Azov was brought in, the Russians were pushed back with some small units encircled who either surrendered or were annihilated.

Azov was reformed after the original problems with neo-Nazi associations and is not associated with atrocities in this war, unlike many units of the Russian Army. Azov's successes led to it being expanded, and it's training and leadership copied by other brigades.

As with past offensives, the Russian offensive around Pokrovsk seems to have culminated with limited gains leaving too little troops and materiel to hold some of the gains, which the Ukrainians are now retaking.

At least some Muslims were supportive of Nazis and the Nazis had Muslim military units in the Balkans. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem was a big Hitler supporter. No, I've never heard of an anti-Muslim orientation to neo-Nazi literature.

Germans were colonizing Ukraine in the 18th and 19th century with the blessing of the Russian Tsars as part of their effort to keep up with European civilization. And some Ukrainians have cultivated a myth that they are descendants of Vikings who plied the rivers and traded between Scandinavia and the eastern Roman Empire. Combined stuff like this led some Ukrainians to side with the Nazis in WWII, even as the Nazis slaughtered millions of Ukrainian slavs.

Post WWII the CIA (etc) provided support to some of the Nazi partisans in a low level guerilla war against the USSR that ran until ~1953. Look up Stephen Bandera. In the post-Soviet era, Ukraine resurrected Bandera as some kind of nationalist hero of Ukraine, and has cultivated the old anti-Soviet, neo-Nazi movement in Ukraine as a stand-in for peaceable nationalism.

So groups like the Azov units are oriented against Russians under the old Nazi notion that Slavs are inferior to more western Europeans, with the notion that Ukrainians - at least those who self identify with Azovites - are somehow not Slavs themselves. After the western-backed coup in 2014 they were given free reign to terrorize the Russian-speaking population of the eastern provinces and led the campaign against Russian separatists.

Ukrainians who want a national and cultural identity seprate from the mass murder and filth of Russia, and who are willing to fight and die for it, are no different than American patriots who have done the same throughout history. Your’s is in fact tne anti nationalist “globohomo” view. Peace Through Strength conservatives have been consistent in our positions and values. Foundationless populists not so much.
