Russia accused of GPS jamming flight of EU leader von der Leyen over Bulgaria

A plane carrying European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was hit by GPS jamming over Bulgaria in a suspected Russian operation, a spokesperson said Monday.

The plane landed safely at Plovdiv airport in central Bulgaria and President von der Leyen will continue her planned tour of the European Union’s eastern front-line nations, said commission spokesperson Arianna Podestà.

“We can indeed confirm that there was GPS jamming,” said Ms. Podestà. “We have received information from the Bulgarian authority that they suspect that this was due to blatant interference by Russia.”

The incident with President von der Leyen’s plane is the latest in a series involving suspected Russian electronic interference with GPS satellite navigation. For months, countries bordering Russia – including Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia – have warned of increased electronic activity interfering with flights, ships, and drones. Russian authorities did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

Unfortunately, Frau Ursula's plane was only hit by GPS jamming. Probably no other figure in Europe (another unelected idol) has done more to destroy the continent in the past five years.

Why the hell would Russia do that? von der Leyen is one of the best ways to keep the rest of Europe weak.

I presume Putin got some very bad news from Trump during the Alaska meeting...
It would explain why Putin has lost his cool and is acting like a cornered injured dog lately. Indeed, he has escalated the war like crazy every single day since the Alaska summit. Attacking and bombing American companies, then he attacked European offices with missiles, and now this latest GPS attack against EU Plane, etc.. Putin never behaved this aggressively against America prior to the Alaska Summit.

And as a last act of vengeance against Trump, he is now making INDIA an ally, that was something unthinkable just a couple of weeks ago as well.

Putin does all he can now to make the BRICS stronger than ever so America can be beaten and replaced on the world stage once and for all.
Putin should know that Trump will not let that happen. No wonder America just authorized new US-made missiles to Ukraine - probably tailored for that Putin bridge in Crimea...

And... the Flamingos are flying happily now as we speak against Russia.. they hit their targets with incredible precision... the refineries are burning all over in Russia. And, Russia’s main bank just admitted that Russia has now entered recession! The boss of that bank will probably fall out of a window this week...

Lastly;
One Flamingo a day keeps the Russians away.

I nominate Angela Merkel, even though she is, thankfully, no longer in power.

Russia has been doing this since the early 60s. Its purpose was to lure aircraft off course for a shoot down or capture. Our aircraft today are totally dependent on electronics that can be fooled. Inertial guidance can not be fooled. That is why our nuclear missiles use it. Once launched it is immune from electronic spoofing. Also, once launched it can not be recalled. It is on a death mission with no recall.

It’s very hard to jam or spoof GPS.

The signal comes from above. Antennas listening for the signal are pointed upwards though typically with nothing more than a hemispherical reception pattern and therefore not really very much gain at all.

But if you’re not above, at those frequencies the signal goes in a straight line. I know it’s popular among the media types to think the GPS can be jammed and spoofed, and it can be, in a lab. It’s just not easy in the real world because the transmitter for jamming is going to likely be below the target and the antenna on that Target is not pointing at it

It’s ridiculous. Why reveal this ability now (if they actually have it)? And against this person?

Russians don't care about western aviation, and regularly jam and spoof gps, especially around Kaliningrad

InThe Russian exclave of Kaliningrad is the source of frequent GPS jamming and spoofing that affects air and maritime traffic in the Baltic Sea region. NATO and EU officials describe this activity as a form of hybrid warfare, though the Kremlin denies any involvement.

Reports indicate the electronic interference is consistent and widespread, with major incidents affecting thousands of flights over the past two years August, Latvia's Electronic Communications Office said it had identified at least three hotspots for jamming along borders with Russia.

In April 2024, a Finnish airline temporarily suspended flights to the Estonian city of Tartu following jamming, while in March that year, a plane carrying the British defense secretary had its satellite signal jammed as it flew near Russian territory.
