David Lammy will tell MPs on Monday that the UK still intends to recognise a Palestinian state next month, with Israel having shown no sign of meeting the government’s demands.
The foreign secretary will say in a Commons statement that government officials intend to carry out a formal assessment in the coming days of whether Israel has complied with the tests set out by the prime minister, Keir Starmer, last month.
But with Benjamin Netanyahu’s government continuing to harden its position in respect to Gaza and the West Bank, the foreign secretary will confirm that Britain remains on the “pathway” to recognising Palestine.
One UK official said: “We will assess all the factors relevant to recognition. But as things stand, we’re on a pathway to recognition later this month.”
Starmer said in August that the UK would recognise Palestine before the UN general assembly, which starts on 9 September, unless Israel met a series of preconditions.
Those included taking “substantive steps” to end the war in Gaza, agreeing a ceasefire and committing not to annex parts of the West Bank.
Far from taking steps towards satisfying any of those demands, however, Netanyahu has shown signs of violating them further.
Reuters reported on Sunday that Israel was considering annexation in the West Bank if France, the UK and other countries push ahead with recognising Palestine.

Well, if there is such a thing as a “Palestinian” state. Tell the bass turds to feed their people and start helping them. Don’t be whining to the U.S. taxpayers to do it the way Mexico does.
Israel should recognize Britain as an islamic state.
These days, yup!
<< One UK official said: “We will assess all the factors relevant to recognition.” >>
They should instead focus on assessing the factors relevant to avoiding a UK civil war.
In before the all Palis are Hamas chorus.
> Israel having shown no sign of meeting the government’s demands <
Well, that’s cute. The UK is still pretending it’s a great empire, with the power to influence events all around the globe.
Meanwhile, the RAF only has around 140 combat-ready aircraft. And the British army has more horses than tanks.
Careful, Israel! Obey, or Starmer might order a cavalry charge.
🐴
All the more reason to raze as much of Gaza as possible starting in the northern sector heading south.
Like it's still 1940.
Israel should recognize Gibraltar and the Falkland Islands as independent states. That’s what’s left of their empire.
And, if that state’s basis is like the previous half dozen proposals and includes a provision about killing all Jews; then the UK has allied itself with hamas. This makes the Uk an enemy of the US.
Enemies of the US should not have nukes. Bring on the B2’s.
We should advocate for the Falkland Islands to “return” to Argentina.
The British people really f’d bad. Not only did they give Labour full power but the idiots gave them a big enough majority to prevent any chance for a no confidence vote. So now we have this kind of BS for four years.
Speaking of indiscriminate bombing, that’s exactly what the US did to Japan after Pearl Harbor. Did Japan have some legitimate complaints against the US! Well, maybe. But it was Japan that ramped it up.
Same goes here. Israel is not perfect. But on October 7, 2023 Hamas ramped it up.
Hamas sowed the wind, and is now reaping the whirlwind.
Should read:
Did Japan have some legitimate complaints against the US?
Sure, a reminder the Jews have been persecuted since before Abraham. Are they perfect? Of course, no. The Middle East has been a mess for a very long time. Simple question sir, why do all the other Arabs want little to do with the enlightened Palastinains?
So, the UK plans to still recognize a Palestinian State.
So, where is it going to be? in Wales?, Scotland?, maybe N. Ireland? No?
Okay, then how about W. England. I’m sure no body there will mind... too much?
Why Israel? Oh, I see it’s someone else’s land, not yours.
Riiight!
If the UK “recognizes” a Palestinian state, does that mean they will accept immigration from there?
