as a white kid going to baltimore city public schools in the late 70s, i was given the talk to, by my father who told me to not disrespect them or they would flip out and attack in numbers. but he said, always stand up to them and you’ll earn their respect or fear. which i did. and did. junior high was ruff, fight every other week, but in high school i had the rep of being crazy.
