Former Yankees World Series winner Mark Teixeira announces run for Congress in Texas

Former New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, who played a pivotal role in the franchise’s most recent World Series win, announced Thursday he will run for Congress from his home state of Texas.

“As a lifelong conservative who loves this country, I’m running for Congress to fight for the principles that make Texas and America great,” Teixeira, who also played for the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Angels in a 14-year big league career, said in X while announcing his run.

“It takes teamwork to win – I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

Teixeira, 45, will run to represent the Lone Star State’s 21st District, located in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio and west of Austin.

The seat is currently held by GOP Rep. Chip Roy, who announced last week he would run for Texas attorney general in 2026 to replace current office-holder Ken Paxton.

In his campaign announcement, the former slugger vowed to “work with President Trump to secure the border, grow the economy, end radical woke indoctrination, promote American energy independence, defend life and the Second Amendment, end forever wars, and strengthen the military.”

“Playing for the Texas Rangers and raising my family in the Lone Star State has been one of the greatest blessings of my life,” Teixeira said. “Now, I’m ready to answer the call to serve my country, my state, and the conservative principles that have made Texas the envy of the nation.”

Is he a MAGA ‘R’? Any MAGA candidates running to fill Roy’s seat?

His exact quote:

“It takes teamwork to win – I’m ready to help defend President Trump’s America First agenda, Texas families, and individual liberty.”

He may be solid. He seems to be saying the right things. And I do want more candidates who are not political lifers.

But I still have an instinctive suspicion of celebrities jumping into politics without any vetting or track record of achievement in any relevant field. That often produces spectacular flameouts. Even if that’s avoided, it can saddle us with candidates and officeholders whose knowledge is bumper sticker deep and who are prone to magical thinking.

So far we’ve dodged the bullet on TikTok influencers and WWE wrestlers, but it’s probably only a matter of time.

He has a lot of experience running a small business, his own. I'd prefer him over just about any lawyer.

Good-I live in Roy’s district-a rep who is not a lawyer who loves to act like he’s addressing a jury on every issue instead of listening to voters would be a welcome change...

Good. He’s got name recognition and he’s not going for the top jobs-think senate/gov. the ‘entitled’ ones go for. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

Trump is a one-off. I wouldn’t base any wider judgments on him. That said, he has always been his own worst enemy and has committed far more than his share of unforced errors, erratic policy shifts, and terrible appointments. While I think we need more non-career politicians running for office, a little experience would have gone a long way in Trump’s case. And he is still prone to magical thinking; the country is headed for bankruptcy, entitlements are the problem, we’ve been kicking the can down the road for decades, and Trump has walked away from the subject.

The Newt Gingrich/Dick Armey/Contract With American Republicans balanced the budget and were opening discussions with Clinton on serious entitlement reform. Then Clinton got Lewinskied and took a hard left turn to keep democrats from bolting. George W. Bush took a serious run at fixing Social Security and the health insurance market, but he got sidetracked by wars in the Middle East and never got traction on the Hill. But since Trump came on the scene, the GOP has taken a powder.

We’re still going bankrupt, and we’re not going to grow our way out of the problem. I have no idea if Trump understands this. If he does, he doesn’t care.

So you prefer Dubya, John McCain, Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan?

I can list plusses and minuses on all of them. I like Republicans who are serious about controlling spending, cutting the deficit, and getting us back to a glide path towards a sustainable future. Dubya at least didn’t flinch from the math; acknowledging the problem is the first step. Trump is pandering on the issue.

Right now if you're living in the UK, Germany or USA, there is only one issue that matters.

Open borders.

Nothing else matters at this moment.

Married at 21 to college girlfriend before he was an MLB star. Has always been a traditional practicing Catholic. Portuguese ancestry. Could have picked anywhere but chose Texas as home. Might be hard to find something not to like politically. Would bring his own money to DC.
