President Donald Trump is embroiled in a multi-front battle with the Federal Reserve, America’s central bank. The latest episode includes Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook’s refusal to leave her position.
On Monday, Trump announced that he “removed” Cook over allegations of mortgage fraud. In his letter announcing the move, Trump cited the Federal Reserve Act’s clause that says the president can fire a board member “for cause,” defined as misconduct or malfeasance.
Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency Bill Pulte reportedly provided fuel for the allegations that Cook committed mortgage fraud. He referred the case to the Justice Department. According to The New York Times, Pulte alleges that:
Ms. Cook had committed mortgage fraud, alleging that she improperly designated both a condominium in Atlanta and a home in Ann Arbor, Mich., as her primary residence when taking out loans. In doing so, Mr. Pulte said, Ms. Cook had “falsified bank documents and property records” in a way that allowed her to obtain a lower interest rate.
Trump’s letter also indicates that Cook has been referred for criminal misconduct. He said:
There is sufficient reason to believe you may have made false statements on one or more mortgage agreements.… In light of your deceitful and potentially criminal conduct in a financial matter … I do not have such confidence in your integrity. At a minimum, the conduct at issue exhibits the sort of gross negligence in financial transactions that calls into question your competence and trustworthiness as a financial regulator.

There’s going to be a complication at the next Fed board meeting if Cook refuses to leave and Powell allows her to vote on interest rates.
Will the vote be considered OFFICIAL if she was the deciding vote to raise, keep or lower interest rates?
That’s a very interesting legal question.

I don’t mind Trump getting rid of this person but trying to get rid of Powell is an entirely different story. Trump wants lower rates but that is going to destroy the dollar. If Powell goes it’s time to load up on gold.

She can file a lawsuit to stay giving the reason that she was unjustly fired.
These people are ENTRENCHED and feel that show they never have seen themselves as having to render an account for good service to the public.

I’m sure she needs all that to access buildings and computer networks.....without authorizations she’s out in the cold physically and digitally.

Cook was not fired for not voting to lower interest rates, she was fired FOR CAUSE ( in her case, alleged mortgage fraud ). She can counter sue ( as I think she will ) claiming she hasn’t been found guilty in a court of law.
It will be all about race. Wait for it.

I earned my “C” in Econ 101, which means I don’t really have a clue regarding the relationship between rates and the dollar. I also don’t know what jurisdiction, if any, the country’s Chief Executive has regarding the Fed.

She could be entirely being used as a salvo to get rid of powell. Ball is not in cooks or trumps hands. Ball is in powell hands.
This played right leads to getting rid of cook AND powell, and potentially a lot more
There are many money experts who don’t agree with your assessment. Also, if things start going the wrong way, the rate can be raised again. It’s happened before and we all survived just fine.
