Trump Proposes Renaming Department of Defense to Its Original Name

President Donald Trump proposed on Aug. 25 that his administration rename the Department of Defense to its previous name, the Department of War.

“Pete, you started off by saying ’the Department of Defense.' And somehow it didn’t sound good to me,” Trump said in the Oval Office, speaking to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, after signing executive orders on fighting crime, including in Washington.

“Defense. What are we, defense? Why are we defense? It used to be called the Department of War, and it had a stronger sound. And, as you know, we won World War I, we won World War II, we won everything. Now we have a Department of Defense. We’re defenders. I don’t know.”

Hegseth, standing behind Trump, said the name change is on the way.

“That’s coming soon, sir,” he told Trump.

Trump said that “Department of War” sounds better than “Department of Defense.”

I like it. I have pictures of a notice board at an older post office which was titled: Department of War.

Bring back authenticity and realism, especially to the military and our war fighting capabilities and focus, at every level and in everything they do.

LOL!

I believe the name change will need to be approved by Congress.

To be historically accurate, the Department of Defense was never called the War Department. The War Department was the name for department controlling the Army. There was a Navy Department as well. The D.O.D. was created with the creation of the independent Air Force.

That said, since the Army, Navy, Air Force and Space Force are all in the business of war, calling the DOD the War Department sounds pretty good. It might also focus the people in the Pentagon on what their true business is.

Really trigger the left by renaming the White House to Orange House. Maybe Whitey House (just kidding). ICE can become NICE (National Immigration and Customs Enforcement). Trump can have fun renaming stuff.

The Department of Defense was not simply a renaming of the old Department of War.

DOD was created by merging the Department of War and the Department of the Navy into the unified Department of Defense. The US Army Air Forces were split off into the separate US Air Force, and the services were now administered by the Sub-cabinet Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Disagree.

Constitutionally our military is basically for DEFENSE whereas military dictatorships and totalitarian gov’ts have military for offense and aggression.

Again, I think Trump’s heart is in the right place because he has said repeatedly that America doesn’t want to start wars and is about defending liberty.

But Trump is also aggressive by nature. Needs to quell that as CIC and I think basically he has.

It’s the Lying Left that can twist that “War” term as they always twist words and meanings to get what they want - more gov’t, less freedom.

I prefer calling it the FAFO Department. Peace through strength; not getting into everyone else’s business, but if we’re attacked we will kill lots of people unlike the Bush years of “winning over hearts and minds” like after 9/11.

Although this Vet supports the idea, it’ll never make it through congress and it just might give the lefties an imaginary, however effective issue.

Before the National Security Act of 1947, Department of War and Department of the Navy were both cabinet level. The Department of War was originally responsible for the operation and maintenance of the United States Army.

War means war, it has nothing to do with being for offense and or aggression. It does mean that if you mess with us, it won’t end well for you.

That ship sailed long ago. We haven’t had a defensive war in 80 years. Might be nice for the so-called department of defense to have a name that accurately reflects what it is today. Might make people think twice.
