Russia: We must have veto power over Ukraine security guarantees
The Telegraph via Yahoo ^ | August 20th, 2025 | Iona Cleave

Russia will only agree to security guarantees for Ukraine if it has the power to veto them, its foreign minister has said.

Sergei Lavrov said that any attempt to bolster Ukrainian security that did not involve Moscow was a “road to nowhere” and “will not work”.

Mr Lavrov said a “very good example” of a potential blueprint could be found in the Istanbul framework of 2022.

Under a draft discussed at the time, Ukraine would have received guarantees from a group of countries including the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – China, Russia, the United States, Britain and France.

Kyiv rejected the proposal as it would have given Moscow veto power over its national security.

On Tuesday, Donald Trump ruled out putting American boots on the ground once a peace deal is signed, but instead suggested the US was prepared to provide air support to police Ukraine’s skies.

These are clearly irreconcilable differences.

POTUS is wasting his time and political capital.

Walk away.

I did not think Russia was serious about ending the war when Putin met with Trump in Alaska.

This is not logical. We are supposed to give Russia the veto power over whether Russia is invading Ukraine again?

How do these fools think?

Walk away. Sell more arms. Bomb pipelines and send wet teams to Geneva to take out the oligarch families. I think Putin’s daughter is there.

Giving an aggressor nation veto power on the defensive arrangements of its likely victims is ludicrous. This shows that Putin is not serious about stopping this war.

This is kind of like a bank robber having veto power over whether a bank keep its money locked up or not. It’s pretty obvious that Russia wants Ukraine, and doesn’t want anyone to stand in its way.

“This shows that Putin is not serious about stopping this war.”

He’s winning.

It’ll be his terms, or the fight will continue.

“””POTUS is wasting his time and political capital. “””

I think President Trump is trying to end it in a polite way.
If Putin doesn’t want to do it that way he will see what happens when President Trump destroys Russia financially.

“when President Trump destroys Russia financially”

That’s a fantasy.

I don’t blame him.
He is agreeing to accept the military presence of foreign powers on his doorstep.
What that means has to be agreeable to both sides.

It would seem to be a deal killer but since it is a British “news” source lt may be BS.

Trump doesn’t usually target the national leader, but I sometimes wonder if he might decide it’s time for Putin to go.

More likely he’ll just stiffen the secondary sanctions.

That’s not what they’re saying. Russia wants to be able to invade Ukraine, at which time it also would have the power to veto anyone defending Ukraine.

This shows Putin’s intensions all along, going back to 2014 and before, that he wanted full control of Ukraine and that Yanukovych was his bitch.

Walk away.

Trump would find that personally humiliating and humiliating to the United States, so that is unlikely.

“would have the power to veto anyone defending Ukraine”

They have that de facto now. Due to proximity, they will always have it.

Then the fight will continue. I've spent a lot of time in Poland and some in Ukraine: it took Stalin even with total control almost ten years to suppress guerillas in both countries.

There's no reason for the Ukrainians to give up because the violence won't end: if Russia takes over or a Russian puppet is installed, every current politician and army member will be murdered or jailed and tortured.

Let's just do a little suppose suppose....

Suppose Ukraine starts a skirmish using imbedded Ukrainians on the Russian side...and I'm sure there are hundreds...

"Z:" says....see...see...he attacks...We shall ALL fight together against him.

Not for nothing..."Z" kinda set out this plan at some point as a future possibility.

Not how it works...It means going to the table before outright war is declared.
