How is Trump's Latest Trucking Mandate Not the Norm?

President Donald Trump signed an executive order in April enforcing regulations already on the books for truck drivers.

"America’s truck drivers are essential to the strength of our economy, the security of our Nation, and the livelihoods of the American people. Every day, truckers perform the demanding and dangerous work of transporting the Nation’s goods to businesses, customers, and communities safely, reliably, and efficiently," the order states. "Proficiency in English, which I designated as our official national language in Executive Order 14224 of March 1, 2025 (Designating English as the Official Language of the United States), should be a non-negotiable safety requirement for professional drivers. They should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station officers. Drivers need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English. This is common sense."

"That is why Federal law requires that, to operate a commercial vehicle, a driver must 'read and speak the English language sufficiently to converse with the general public, to understand highway traffic signs and signals in the English language, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.' Yet this requirement has not been enforced in years, and America’s roadways have become less safe," the order continues.

Last weekend we learned why that enforcement is necessary.

Sanctuary states like California and Washington are issuing Commercial Driver's Licenses to illegal aliens who don't speak English and can't read basic driving signs. The results are deadly and in violation of federal law.

That is the punchline. And, no one will be held accountable for it.

While this action makes a huge amount of sense, not being able to speak or read English was not the Sikh driver's problem in Florida. Who on earth does NOT know what the international symbol for "No U Turn" symbol means?

The problem is they hired drivers with the IQs of a turnip.

"...no one will be held accountable for it."

Sadly...

“Sanctuary states like California and Washington are issuing Commercial Driver’s Licenses to illegal aliens who don’t speak English and can’t read basic driving signs.” All federal transportation funds should obviously be withheld from these two rogue states.

I never understood why interstate CDLs weren't the norm. Sure, as long as they were only going to operate within the boundaries of a given state, then let that state issue an intrastate CDL for that state. But, if they are an interstate trucker, they need to have an interstate federal CDL so there can be a nationwide standard.

This is why the fed controls pilot licenses and who can fly aircraft in this country. It's not a state thing. The laws and rules in aviation are standardized across the nation. And, YOU HAVE TO SPEAK CLEAR UNDERSTANDABLE ENGLISH TO HAVE ONE!

The fact that he learned to drive in Mumbai might explain his driving proficiency, or lack thereof.

India is a place were all road signs are ignored, it’s cultural.

Back in the summer of ‘76, I caught Hep A in Mexico. Went to Argentina for another job. The Argentinian guy I worked with recognized it and drove me to the hospital — a good chunk of the way on the downtown Buenos Aires sidewalk! It was total chaos, everybody doing whatever they wanted regardless of sign or pavement markings. I’ve never seen anything like it.

CDLs were supposed standardize the requirements for a truck driver’s license. Before CDLs, one state’s regular license would allow the holder to operate a commercial vehicle in another state.

The same logic applies to the physical exam. The expectation is that every driver meets a minimum level of fitness. From the state of some drivers, the standard is not being enforced.
