Trump-Putin summit in Alaska ends with no deal on Ukraine ceasefire
CBS News ^ | Aug 15, 2025

President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin met in Alaska on Friday for a high-stakes summit on ending the war in Ukraine, but the talks failed to produce the ceasefire that Mr. Trump had sought.

The two leaders, along with a pair of top aides each, met for nearly three hours at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage after a carefully choreographed welcome that included a red carpet and military flyover.

In brief remarks afterward, Putin alluded to unspecified "agreements," while Mr. Trump called the meeting "extremely productive." Neither leader, however, mentioned a halt to the fighting in Ukraine. The talks ended without a planned meeting between a broader group of officials.

Trump was in no position to make a deal.

Nor did he really want to be.

Trump made it clear yesterday when signing the Social Security proclamation that he and this country were out the Ukraine war business.

He said at least three times we weren’t spending a dime on weapons for the Ukraine with the subtext being nor would we go back to funding the Ukraine war machine.

Trump and Putin both needed to meet for their own self-interest.

Trump is going to relay what Putin said to the little fella and the Euroweenies, but whatever it was, it’s doubtful if there were any surprises.

Sure Trump wanted to play the peacemaker, but he’s not stupid, he knew with Zelensky’s stance and his support from the American Neocons and the Euroweenies that ship had sailed a long time ago.

Trump is just putting the ball in the court where it belongs.

Trump is saying I did all that I could and this war is now all yours baby, bye, bye.

Sad, but not totally unexpected.

It will be interesting to see if any developments will influence at least a temporary lessening of hostilities in the near term. It will be important to watch the battlefield for the next couple of days. Will they ramp things up, or will they tone things down?

CBS really, really wants it to have been a bust. It wasn’t.

72-hour rule in play. Keeping my eyes open for new and updated developments before coming to any hard-and-fast conclusions.

I get the feeling that there are a lot of people who can somehow justify and even invent pure genius from only a few words.

All that from what we know, eh?

🇺🇸🇷🇺 “President I will like to thank you very much. I’ll speak to you very soon. And probably see you again very soon. Thank you very much Vladimir.” - President Trump.

“Next time in Moscow.” - President Putin, in English.

“Ooo, that’s an interesting one. I’ll get a little heat for that one. But I can see it possibly happening. Thank you.” - President Trump.

we don’t know what deal if any was arrived at. obviously DJT had to run the substance by Zelenskyy at a minimum. no details on what they agreed upon were shared - but i think it was dubious a ceasefire would happen. Putin needs more “persuasion” to drop his Soviet Empire dreams.

IMHO the only way for this war to end is for Ukraine to rid themselves of Zelensky.

I believe that many in parts of Ukraine identify more with Russia.

Your humble opinion is shared by a lot of folk.

I'd say it's even shared by Putin and Trump.

Nothing was going to be decided today.

Both men knew that going in.

Zelensky was ready to dump on anything that the two substantively agreed upon.

Obviously, Trump wanted a peace agreement.

But short of a peace agreement Trump has gotten the next best thing.

He got NATO and the Euroweenies to use the additional 3 per cent of GDP that they pledged to spend on defense to go to the Ukraine which FREED the United States from writing checks to Z.

What’s really bad about this conflagration with Ukraine is it’s two Christian countries literally killing off millions of white Christian males, while the Muslim world looks on with apparent glee. The West with all its infidels in suicide mode.

The next thing is, Russia will not trade with the U.S. unless and until the U.S. denounces and pulls out of NATO. NATO countries do not like America one bit. They tolerate us and our money. That is all. But that’s as far as it goes. It would be very pleased to drag America into another blood-shedding World War without so much as batting an eyelid.

NATO promised Russia there would be no expansion in its membership in the direction of the Russian border. But it broke its promise big time. So Russia is completely justified in refusing to accept one of its former Soviet Oblasts becoming a member of NATO and setting up NATO weapons systems right on Russia’s doorstep.

All that may be true, but Russia and the EU will have a vote on it before this is over. Putin won’t be satisfied with just a piece of Ukraine when his goal is to restore the Russian Empire.

Ukraine could block any peace. They are dependent on other countries to continue funding the war.
