The fake submissions included fabricated quotes from a speech to the state legislature and nonexistent case citations purportedly from the Supreme Court.
A senior lawyer in Australia has apologized to a judge for filing submissions in a murder case that included fake quotes and nonexistent case judgments generated by artificial intelligence. The blunder in the Supreme Court of Victoria state is another in a litany of mishaps AI has caused in justice systems around the world. Defense lawyer Rishi Nathwani, who holds the prestigious legal title of King’s Counsel, took “full responsibility” for filing incorrect information in submissions in the case of a teenager charged with murder, according to court documents seen by The Associated Press on Friday.
“We are deeply sorry and embarrassed for what occurred,” Nathwani told Justice James Elliott on Wednesday, on behalf of the defense team. The AI-generated errors caused a 24-hour delay in resolving a case that Elliott had hoped to conclude on Wednesday. Elliott ruled on Thursday that Nathwani’s client, who cannot be identified because he is a minor, was not guilty of murder because of mental impairment.
“At the risk of understatement, the manner in which these events have unfolded is unsatisfactory,” Elliott told lawyers on Thursday. “The ability of the court to rely upon the accuracy of submissions made by counsel is fundamental to the due administration of justice,” Elliott added.

AI, I for one am glad I will be gone before it wrecks our world completely. It has a good start.
He must be related to Adam Shiff.
If this person isn’t barred for life from practicing law then it’s all window dressing.
You don’t know that, it may kidnap your brain and keep it alive in a jar.
I’m enjoying people feeding fake legal cases to AI engines.
Apparently, it’s achieving its desired effect…
I have plenty of Reynolds Wrap in my hats to hide me.
“AI, I for one am glad I will be gone before it wrecks our world completely. It has a good start.”
AI is deeply embedded in our systems. It will never be gone.
Yes, it used to be in the old days that you'd always have a paralegal or junior associate "Shepardize" a case to make sure it was good law, the citations were all correct, etc.. And you'd have someone do the same thing for all the citations to the factual record.
But apparently, that is one of the places corners are getting cut.
Actually, that’s better than most legal associates do.
Judges and lawyers using AI are useless and should FIRED/REMOVED
Yeah, 40 years ago. Now you do a Westlaw cite check or the online equivalent. You can upload your whole brief and do every case at once. This person didn’t even do that.
AI is just a compilation of everything it finds on the Internet about a topic. This is why the left lies about everything. It will be picked up by AI just the same as the truth. It’s like Wikipedia on steroids, good for researching something factual like winners of previous Olympics but worse than worthless for anything the least bit political.
"Australian Lawyer Sorry for AI Errors in Murder Case, Including Fake Quotes and Made up Cases"
To err is human. To really foul things up requires AI.
And cheap.
Also they are, like anyone who believes that AI actually exists, bone deep stupid.
There is no such thing as AI, there probably never will be any such thing as AI. What is out now it a Large Language Model that was programmed using (stolen) fiction.
Every time I have seen the results of someone using it there have been major errors of fact. Oh it is put together nicely. Good grammar, no misspellings, and factually wrong.
And that is scary.
“AI is just a compilation of everything it finds on the Internet about a topic.”
That is just a very small part of AI.
Lots of AI never accesses the internet.
“There is no such thing as AI, there probably never will be any such thing as AI. What is out now it a Large Language Model that was programmed using (stolen) fiction.”
That is just a subset of AI.
Worship at the alter of AI, die at the alter of AI.
Did your nitwit phone tell you so?
