Colorado congressional members visit ICE facility

DENVER (KDVR) — A handful of Democrats in Colorado’s congressional delegation went inside the GEO ICE facility in Aurora on Monday. The visit comes as they try to gain clarity and access from the Trump administration about what is going on there.
They spoke with members of the press after the visit to share what they say they saw.
Democratic U.S. House members from Colorado visited the ICE facility, saying they left the building with more questions than answers.
“When I walked through the facility, it felt like a prison,” Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen said at a press conference following the visit.
The Colorado Democratic congressional members said the GEO ICE facility in Aurora has changed since the last time they went inside it.
“After my 10th visit, this has been the most difficult visit in terms of getting information, getting answers out of the facility, out of the employees, being obstructed from conducting full oversight, that I’ve had in over six years,” said Congressman Jason Crow, whose district is home to the facility.
They said, unlike unannounced visits in years past, they had to give advanced notice before coming in. Lawmakers said they did not feel they were able to get a full depiction of what is really happening behind those walls.
“It’s a constitutional duty for members of Congress to do oversight of facilities like this. There is nothing in the law that says members of Congress should have to give previous notice. The reason we gave previous notice is because we wanted to see what the heck was in there. Because we were forced to give seven days’ notice before we went, it was very convenient- a lot of the things we saw,” said Congresswoman Diana DeGette. “Somehow, I have to get a privacy release to them through the mail or other means before I or myself can even come in. In the past, what happened was if any congressional staffer or member of Congress wanted to visit someone in here, they could come in and visit them and have their release right there and have it signed. It’s just another attempt to stop people from visiting their constituents.”
Members said detainees were separated by criminal levels: falling under medium and high risk. They also said phone calls cost detainees 15 cents a minute per call — raising concerns in a state where calls for state prisoners are free. Members said they are worried that facility staffers cleaned up the area before they could visit, adding to their concerns that they have already taken action over.
“The administration is violating federal law with respect to its unlawful policies regarding unannounced visits to ICE facilities, as well as their policies regarding visits to field offices. Which is why we are suing the Trump administration in the court of law,” Congressman Joe Neguse reminded reporters.
FOX31 reached out to ICE to try to gain clarity on the congressional visitation policy and get their response to some of these claims, and has not heard back.
It’s a constitutional duty for members of Congress to do oversight of facilities like this...
What about protecting law-abiding citizens of their respective states?
“When I walked through the facility, it felt like a prison”
Now there’s a genius for you.
Has she ever been in a prison before? Certainly not as an inmate...
> Colorado congressional members visit ICE facility <
They should be required to visit the grave of someone killed by an illegal first.
I despise these people. Especially Crow.
“What about protecting law-abiding citizens of their respective states?”
That’s optional.
Hahaha, now they are complaining about the cleanliness....”Members said they are worried that facility staffers cleaned up”
Or they fed the cleaning fluid to the prisoners they were waterboarding. That will be next.
Did she bring her baby there?
Congressional oversight does not allow reps in to facilities. It allows them to question and review in DC.
This is the typical low IQ Denver Democrat. "People" don't have "constituents, hunny buns. The people ARE constituents and they must be LEGAL CITIZENS who actually vote. This was just a field trip for the children so that they can feel self righteous for a day.
“Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen”
She is just falling back on her disappointment of prison not helping cure her addict mother. She places a standard upon prisons that shouldn’t be there. She is a poor choice to be in this controversy.

How exactly do you know that it feels like a prison, congresscritter?
LoL
“it felt like a prison”
It wasn’t the Radisson!
lol They are criminals, scheisskopf.
I share your despisement.
He’s such a puss
"Gain clarity"? OK, let's be clear: it's a preview of where the majority of the country wants certain corrupt, thieving congress members to end up.
