Perry, N.Y. (WHAM) — A man from China who has been living in Wyoming County for the last 30 years was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcements agents after he went to the local immigration office for a routine check-in, according to his family.

It's been nearly a month since 56-year-old You Chen Yang, the former owner of Hong Kong Restaurant on Main Street in Perry, was taken into custody. His daughter, Elizabeth Yang, said Friday she's still in shock.

"ICE Buffalo arrested Chinese national You Chen Yang July 14 pursuant to a warrant of removal issued by an immigration judge in 2002. This alien has had his due process and remained at large for over 20 years. Under President Trump and DHS Secretary Noem’s leadership, ICE is focused on removing illegal aliens who pose a threat to the security of our communities as well as those who have a final order of removal. Yang is in custody pending execution of his removal from the U.S."

Why did he have a ‘routine check in’?

How can they justify removing someone like that from the country? He wasn’t a fugitive, wasn’t evading them, they were well aware of his presence all those years; no doubt paying taxes on his business plus real estate property taxes.

THIS is exactly what people are objecting to and rightly so. If anything, clean out the office that he was reporting to on a regular basis. Those employees were getting paid a salary and not doing their job - but that’s par for the bureaucracy...

Why did he have a ‘routine check in’?

And why could he not acquire citizenship in 30 years?

Article doesn’t say anything about him being illegal or criminal. Says he was here on a work visa and had already taken the first steps in getting his green cards. Sounds like something is wrong here, or we aren’t being told all the facts. Maybe he’s a spy!!!!

The reporter forgot to use the word “illegally” in the first sentence. And why was he allowed to “check-in” regularly for 23 yrs after being adjudicated for deportation? If there is no nationwide oversight of immigration courts, then that’s a major security problem!

All we know is what this article says - and that’s not necessarily the truth.

“ICE Buffalo arrested Chinese national You Chen Yang July 14 pursuant to a warrant of removal issued by an immigration judge in 2002.”

This is what recovery from decades of immigration law enforcement neglect looks like.

We should not blame the people who are doing their jobs now just because someone else has not done their jobs for many years. If you were running a criminal enterprise and the police ignored it for years does that make it legal and should what you do no longer be a crime?

I believe we have a broken immigration system but it is never going to get fixed if at some point we don’t enforce the laws. Once that is done, the border is secured and people who have been ordered removed or have committed crimes while here are regularly removed, maybe we can talk about making it easier for people to legally come to this country and get citizenship.

He was supposed to be deported in 2002 after overstaying his visa. He had his due process and still never left, which is an additional crime. We’re also not yet privy as to whether he committed further criminal acts. I’d put my trust into this administration rather than the MSM.

If he’s here illegally, then he doesn’t need to be here. Deport him.
