In my lifetime, rent control in NYC was for the wealthy, or at least solidly middle class.

I don't think Cuomo would ever propose this. Except he thinks he can beat Mamdani.

The law is intended for people like the Mamdani’s. It’s a feature, not a bug. Cuomo never cared that it benefits people in their income level before now.

He’s got it wrong. It’s not just about privilege. It’s about a communist system that transfers money from the landlord to the tenant. Pure theft.

If Cuomo was serious about reform he would abolish “rent stablization” for everyone

Didn't think to do that though, did you Andy Pandy, when recently-dead RAT Congressman Charlie Rangel had four rent-controlled apartments in the same building in Harlem. One he used as a campaign office.

This will never pass and Cuomo knows it.

There are way too many tenants of means living in rent controlled apartments. And they're far better organized than would-be future tenants, who would benefit from such a law.

Rent control is a third rail in NYC. You NEVER touch it if you want to get elected. Any attempt to reform rent control sends tenants into panic. If you take away some wealthier tenants' right, they might be next.

I don't think Cuomo would ever propose this. Except he thinks he can beat Mamdani.

Wrong. This is a desperation move. Cuomo will upset too many well-organized tenants. It's a Hail Mary pass, hoping that prospective tenants will make up the difference.

Cuomo wouldn't propose this unless he figures that his numbers are so bleak, he's got nothing to lose at this point.

Exactly. Cuomo needs to STFU and take the “L”.

Politicians like this are the problem.

On any given day, a “decent” politician could propose reforming rent control so that it actually helps poor people. But no politician would ever do such a thing.

But — on a special occasion — an ambitious politician can propose rent control reform because “this is how I can beat my opponent and seize power for myself!”

And in the meantime, the other politician is abusing rent control because “I’m better than everyone else. I deserve these perks”.

The political class in a nutshell: they don’t care about you. Everything is about them.

"Cuomo wouldn't propose this unless he figures that his numbers are so bleak, he's got nothing to lose at this point."

Bingo. Remember Dukakis admitting he was a liberal a week before the election? Another desperation move that failed miserably.

If $2300 is the rent controlled amount for a one bedroom, how much is market rate? Ouch.

Wrong.

Weird, because you basically restated what I said.

You said: Except he thinks he can beat Mamdani.

I said he thinks he can't beat Mamdani (hence, his desperation move).

That’s a quibble. Obviously he is trying to do it, because he thinks it could help him win. What I said implies desperation. He’s doing something he would never do otherwise. I don’t think he has a chance.

From this article, it seems that Mamdani's apartment is not rent controlled. It's rent stabilized.

Those are two separate sets of laws. Two separate classes of apartments.

I think when Mamdani is up for re-election in four years, Donald Jr, will run against him.
