Cornyn leans into Texas redistricting fight amid uphill reelection bid

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) is leaning into the Texas redistricting battle as he seeks to fend off a conservative primary challenge from state Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

On Tuesday, Cornyn publicly called for FBI Director Kash Patel to assist in tracking down Democrats who fled the state in protest. Two days later, the senator and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) separately confirmed that the FBI was assisting in the effort.

The move to get out in front of the redistricting battle allows Cornyn to ingratiate himself with the state’s deeply conservative base, who have distanced themselves from the incumbent senator in his uphill primary battle against Paxton.

“I think this is a good opportunity for Cornyn to show that he’s a fighter and that’s willing to take on an issue that’s a red meat issue that resonates with the base. When you see those opportunities, you have to take them,” said Brendan Steinhauser, Cornyn’s former campaign manager and a Texas-based GOP strategist.

“In campaigns like this, you don’t get to control events. You can only control how you react and respond to them,” he continued. “This is exactly the kind of thing he needs.”

Cornyn’s allies have touted the senator’s move. The National Republican Senatorial Committee rolled out a digital ad titled “Cornyn Fights, Paxton Folds.”

The incumbent senator and his allies have also taken a number of swipes at Paxton in the process, pointing out that the state attorney general was in Europe as the redistricting battle erupted.

Paxton had previously traveled to Scotland at the end of July and met with President Trump during his trip to his Turnberry golf course.

That guy is throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the wall trying to convince voters he is conservative. I would like to see him explain why he has a 54% Liberty conservative rating, if he is so conservative.

I pray Texas conservatives do not fall for this Cornyn monkey again. He only plays conservative 6 months prior to an election.

The ULTIMATE RINO Monkey —— John Cornyn!!

He does this each election. Just starting early because this time he has a popular true conservative that is going to put him out of the Senate.

Cornyn is putting his mug anywhere he can. Bushies, RINO’s running ads for him already for midterms. Wormed his way into front row seat at the big flood press conference one day. I’ve voted against him for the last several terms. Every time I see him I dislike him more.

Paxton will retire him.

What is it with these DC RINOS, every time they’re up for re-election, they suddenly take on the persona of pro Americanism. Lindsey Graham and John Cornyn are classic bait and switch DC RINO pukes. Enough of both of them, throw them out!

Cornyn is getting free advertising. No need to spend campaign cash.

Ah, the ol' McCain strat.

C'mon Texas GOPers and Indies, pay attention and refuse to be used like a rented mule (again).

Cornyn could have proposed this long ago.
Assuming he wasn’t working for the RATS.

Thank you. At my 20th I posted my “Nopus,” a riff on the old “Opus”es we would see when people left. I’ll do that again at my 25th in December. Pushing to get to 12,500 replies by then, 500 per year on average. Not as useful as mega-posters like yourself, but I do my small part

This is like Lindsay Graham getting uber-conservative every 6th year. Please don’t fall for it, Texas. Throw Cornyn out. Cornyn is Mitch McConnell without the marbles in his mouth.

Cornyn is for whoever’s winning. People in Texas have had enough of his milk toast BS. He will soon be leaving the Senate.
