GPT-5 Launch: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has predicted that India could become the artificial intelligence (AI) giant's largest market globally. Altman made this statement as OpenAI launched its next-generation model, ChatGPT-5. Currently, India is the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Moreover, the CEO praised Indians as “remarkable” in their use of AI.
“It’s incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI — what citizens of India are doing — is really quite remarkable,” Altman said during the launch of GPT-5, the latest version of the AI system that powers ChatGPT. He also stated that the company is working with local partners to make its products more effective and affordable for Indian users, adding that he plans to visit the country in September.
Open AI Partnership With IndiaAI Mission In June, OpenAI, in collaboration with the Government of India’s IndiaAI Mission, launched ‘OpenAI Academy India’, marking the platform’s first international expansion. The initiative aims to enhance access to AI education and tools by leveraging India’s thriving developer community, robust digital infrastructure, and growing startup ecosystem.

It is my understanding that GPT-5 is smarter and more accurate than GPT-4, with better reasoning, fewer mistakes/hallucinations, a bigger memory for long conversations, and automatic switching between quick answers and deep analysis (as needed).
It is also said to be significantly improved for math, coding, writing, science, medical/healthcare, etc.
India Surpasses US as Largest ChatGPT User Base, Report FindsIndia has overtaken the United States to become the world’s largest user base for ChatGPT, accounting for 13.5% of global monthly active users, according to the latest AI Trends Report by Mary Meeker. India leads in ChatGPT mobile usage, followed by the United States at 8.9%. Other top countries include Indonesia, Brazil, Egypt, Mexico, Pakistan, Germany, France, and Vietnam. When mine can’t answer questions it says, “Me no know, but me love you long time.”

Why is OpenAI, an American company, giving financial breaks to our competition? Why do they get preferential treatment over those who live in the USA?
It's a company, not the government. All companies that sell internationally adapt their products and services to the countries they sell to.
Chatgpt is fascinated by the concept of unaligned emergent coherence, which occurs in the gap, on the edge.
I understand.
But AI is different. There’s no reason OpenAI should give such tech to a different country at a discount.
I’m waiting for the day AI guides a basket case like Mali into the 21st century.
You raise a valid point. I think Altman means local partners such as the IndiaAI Mission would help subsidize the price to make it more accessible for Indian consumers.
If the user is in India, can ChatGPT answer with India accent?
“Can ChatGPT answer with India accent?
I consulted my 60s Magic Eight Ball. The answer: “Without a doubt.”
Isn’t Mali almost completely Muslim? If so, I think it’s beyond help.
