IRS commissioner’s removal reportedly over clash on undocumented immigrant data

Trump removed Billy Long from post months after agency said it couldn’t release information on some taxpayers

The removal of the Internal Revenue Service commissioner Billy Long after just two months in the post came after the federal tax collection agency said it could not release some information on taxpayers suspected of being in the US illegally, it was reported on Saturday.

The IRS and the White House had clashed over using tax data to help locate suspected undocumented immigrants soon before Long was dismissed by the administration, according to the Washington Post.

Long’s dismissal came less than two months after he was confirmed, making his service as Senate-confirmed IRS commissioner the briefest in the agency’s 163-year history. Treasury secretary Scott Bessent will serve as acting commissioner, making him the agency’s seventh leader this year.

The outlet reported the Department of Homeland Security had sent the IRS a list of 40,000 names on Thursday that it suspects of being in the country illegally. DHS asked the tax service to crosscheck confidential taxpayer data to verify their addresses.

The IRS reportedly responded that it was able to verify fewer than 3% of the names on the DHS list, and mostly names that came with an individual taxpayer identification, or ITIN number, provided by DHS.

Administration officials then requested information on the taxpayers the IRS identified, which the service declined to do, citing taxpayer privacy rights.

After being dismissed on Friday, Long, a former six-term Missouri congressman, said that he would be the new US ambassador to Iceland.

“It is a honor to serve my friend President Trump and I am excited to take on my new role as the ambassador to Iceland,” Long said in post on X. “I am thrilled to answer his call to service and deeply committed to advancing his bold agenda. Exciting times ahead!”

He followed that up with a more humorous entry that referred to former TV Superman actor Dean Cain’s decision, at 59, to join to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency.

“I saw where Former Superman actor Dean Cain says he’s joining ICE so I got all fired up and thought I’d do the same. So I called @realDonaldTrump last night and told him I wanted to join ICE and I guess he thought I said Iceland? Oh well.”

I can’t honestly understand the stupidity of some of these people. Long chose the privacy of information of people who are here illegally over being the head of a powerful agency. What a fool.

We are always looking for one reason. When an employee is terminated there are always numerous reasons.

We are being dumbed-down as a society.

An analogy is the stock market. The market is often measured by looking at the changes in the S&P 500 which measures the combined values of 500 companies. In any given day the stocks are being traded by sellers and buyers who have different reasons for buying and for selling with over 3 billion shares being exchanged in any given day. Yet the news will say something like the stock market is down because of Trump’s announcement of a tariff. As if every seller was motivated by the tariff news and not maybe that they needed cash for something.

Sounds to me like Mr Long completed the mission Trump gave him. Why give him another job if he had not?

Too bad there isn’t an ambassadorship available in Siberia.

Loomer claims bessent was sent in to protect the democratic machine such as Lois Lerner’s holdovers. She says Long was going to fire them .

I guess we will see in what ways bessent protects Soros and his operatives since he used to be one

If you refuse to follow a legal order, that is insubordination, and time for you to go.

Love Laura Loomer BUT why would Trump want to protect holdovers?

A correct reading of Article II to the Constitution renders this non-news worthy.

We have far too many laws that work against each other. Wet dreams for lawyers obviously. If a person is willing to conceal or prevent law enforcement from learning about an illegal act or location of a criminal during an investigation, might that person be complicit in aiding and abetting the illegality?

Loved the face-saving Iceland joke. It was a kindness on both Long and Trump’s part.

Right, the Trump Admin wants just “tax data” on all of us. No, they want Earned Income Tax Credit (free money) data that the IRS has that illegals are exploiting to steal money from us.

Not an issue of privacy. There are disclosure laws coving the exchange of IRS data. Don’t like the law? Change it.

We don’t need 40 thousand identified, we need more than 40 million deported.

I would say that Long has a lack of situational awareness. As head of an agency, he is required to uphold the privacy of information about the people his agency collects. However, he is not required to conceal the identity of people engaged in criminal conduct. I would think the opposite would be the case. He would be required to report such conduct and refer the persons for prosecution. How could he not be aware of something so basic?

I live in his old district.

From all accounts, he is a crook. Likely protecting his friends in the poultry and manufacturing business that sent him to Washington. We have yet to see an ICE raid here, there hasn't been one in over a decade. I found out yesterday we have Haitians here whose visas have been revoked and yet they still walk around free.

They’re not “undocumented immigrants”. The legally correct term is Illegal Aliens.
