Ukraine will not give up land, Zelensky says ahead of Trump-Putin meeting next week

In the last few minutes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has given his first reaction to the announcement of a Trump-Putin meeting next week, saying Ukraine "will not give their land to occupiers".

In a statement on the messaging app Telegram, Zelensky says any solutions without Ukraine will be "solutions against peace".

This comes after US President Donald Trump announced a few hours ago that he will be meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday 15 August to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Trump signalled that Ukraine may have to cede territory in a peace deal with Russia, telling reporters: "There will be some swapping of territories."

The BBC's US partner CBS News has also reported that the White House is trying to convince European leaders to accept a deal that would see Ukraine giving up swathes of territory, including the Donbas, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions.

There goes any peace plan down the drain.

Well, CBS News’ reporting contradicts Trump. If Zelensky is responding to CBS News and not to Trump, he may change his tune when he finds the actual deal. Trump suggests a land swap for peace; this would suggest that Russia gets more land than they started with, but less than they have now. CBS reports makes it sound like Russia will get everything they want and have to give up nothing.

BREAKING: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the planned summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, warning that any peace deal excluding Kyiv would lead to “dead solutions.”

At least with Zelensky in power. Regardless of anyones feelings, I honestly don’t see how Ukraine gets any lost land back without some kind of trade/negotiation for it.

Ukraine does not want a deal giving up swathes of territory, including the Donbas, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. These areas are important to getting access to the Black Sea which leads into the Mediterranean.

Putin wants to cut off Ukraine’s access to the Black Sea making them ripe for a future invasion. A nonstarter.

Judging by the current map of the front, he has already given up a chunk of land.

They won’t need to worry about future invasion without a peace deal. They are done and nobody is going to fight that war for them.

Zelensky always was lying which is commonplace for him.

“Losers aren’t winners”.

Of course Zelinski is saying these things, it is what every self-respecting head of state would say. To go into negotiations by conceding everything (Donald Trump style) would be malpractice.

Zelinski cannot be sure of what Donald Trump is dealing away in this first meeting to which Zelinski has not been invited. Of course he has to negotiate in the press while he is denied a seat at the table. We have seen this film before.

The problem is we have two egoistical maniacs who insist they must claim to be the “winner” at all costs.

If they just call it a draw there are no losers or winners.

Not that Zelensky has a say in the outcome, but if he decides to act in Ukraine’s interest, rather than Europe’s interest, he’ll take any deal that lets him keep Odessa.

That’s the reason that Stammer and Zelensky are being kept out of this meeting.

“Does Zman flee to a safe haven or does he go down with the ship ?”

Only if he continues to take orders from the Europeans. Otherwise, he’ll be on his own to deal with whatever the Azovs have in store for him.
