JD Vance warns against UK going down 'dark path' of losing free speech during meeting with David Lammy
Sky News ^ | Friday 8 August 2025

JD Vance has said he does not want the UK to go down a "very dark path" of losing free speech during a meeting with the foreign secretary at his country estate.

The US vice president has previously raised concerns that free speech is being eroded in the UK.

However, during a two-day visit to David Lammy's grace and favour 115-room mansion, Chevening House in Kent, Mr Vance kept his criticism a bit more low key.

Asked about free speech in the UK during a televised meeting of the two men, Mr Vance said he has "raised concerns" about free speech in his own country and accused the West of "censoring rather than engaging" with different opinions.

He said: "I think the entire collective West, the transatlantic relationship, our NATO allies, certainly the United States under the Biden administration, got a little too comfortable with censoring rather than engaging with a diverse array of opinions. So that's been my view.

"Obviously, I've raised some criticism, concerns about our friends on this side of the Atlantic.

"But the thing that I'd say to the people of England or anybody else, to David, is many of the things that I worry most about were happening in the United States from 2020 to 2024.

"I just don't want other countries to follow us down what I think was a very dark path under the Biden administration."

JD Vance had better be careful there. His comments can be interpreted as divisive hate speech. And that could result in a UK warrant for his arrest.

I should know. I once called Starmer an idiot, and a dupe of the Muslim invaders. So now there are three separate teams from Scotland Yard looking for me.

I don’t think I have ever seen a VP that was so engaged and active with leaders around the world.

Dunno. I just listened to Michael Malice’s interview of Carl Benjamin. It sounds like the British right is ready to draw and quarterly the Starmerites.

You are correct sir. The question is, where do they go from here?

Lammy doesn’t even identify as British so why is he even in that position ? Besides which, not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

“You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police ... yet in their hearts there is unspoken fear.
They are afraid of words and thoughts: words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home — all the more powerful because forbidden — terrify them.
A little mouse of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic.”

I think it goes further than freedom of speech, it’s a time where ordinary people have a much better grasp of reality than elites seem to do, and it’s very easy even for populist leaders like Trump and Vance to get surrounded by experts and self-important careerists and lose track of what is essentially true or false about the world around us.

If Trump and Putin do manage to meet next week, I hope a voice of reason will be heard at that table, people who are not as important as them have had their lives ruined and their country largely destroyed, and basically for nothing beyond some paranoid ideas and self-serving nonsense rhetoric. There is far too much of that going on, of course the globalist left are the biggest offenders and have the most to lose if reality should ever return to the public square. But I perceive that it can happen to any ideology and to any insulated group who lose touch with their voters and their base. You can see the first signs of it on the right as well. Perhaps it’s an inevitable part of the political process. Winston Churchill is often quoted in regard to freedom of speech and perhaps he was a sort of gold standard in that regard, I wonder sometimes how he dealt with his own critics though. It’s easy enough to say somebody else has lost their freedom of speech, this is why I often find comments about Canada jarring because frankly I am just as free as you are to speak my mind, and just as likely to be ignored by an expert class who don’t want to hear reason.

This is the real problem, not that free speech is punished, but that good ideas are ignored because they do not serve the purposes of elites. It is in fact a far bigger problem. I’ve suffered in both ways but I am far more regretful that the society around me has lost an ability to have meaningful conversation, than that one person took away a bit of money in a contrived legal case against me.

There are actually two forks of the UK violations of free speech. First the censorship and punishment of open speech. and second the violations of privacy by forcing tech to give them backdoors to any and all private communication so they can also punish private free speech.

To condemn one is to condemn them both.

But yet I wonder why Vance is against the first but is all in on the concept of the second? Right now He and his mentor Peter Thiel are using Palantir to violate privacy and communications to create personal databases on every citizen in this country without any probable cause or warrants.

There is absolutely no difference between what the UK is doing against privacy and what Palantir is doing against privacy. He is being disingenuous and hypocritical. Protecting UK rights but outright proud to use taxpayer dollars to violate our own here.

The UK is already there:

Why Britain Arrests 30 People Every Day For Speech

"30 daily arrests for speech offenses and a quarter-million non-crime hate incidents recorded in recent years, often for online posts challenging government narratives on immigration or gender issues."

All the sources claiming that Vance is working with Palantir to violate privacy come from far left wing propaganda sites, including the loathsome Reddit, Bloomberg, Financial Times, Washington Post, the Times of India, The Guardian and other deep state liars.

I agree that Palantir needs to be dissected and watched, but you avoided answering the question.

Are you claiming that Trump and Vance are setting up a system to spy on Americans? That reads like a story that David Brook would grow in his fever swamp. And the sources for that claim reads like a list of vile deep state propaganda sites.
