India's Modi to visit China for first time in 7 years as tensions with US rise

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit China for the first time in over seven years, a government source said on Wednesday, in a further sign of a diplomatic thaw with Beijing as tensions with the United States rise.

Modi will go to China for a summit of the multilateral Shanghai Cooperation Organisation that begins on Aug. 31, the government source, with direct knowledge of the matter, told Reuters. India's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

His trip will come at a time when India's relationship with the U.S. faces its most serious crisis in years after President Donald Trump imposed the highest tariffs among Asian peers on goods imported from India, and has threatened an unspecified further penalty for New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil.

Modi's visit to the Chinese city of Tianjin for the summit of the SCO, a Eurasian political and security grouping that includes Russia, will be his first since June 2018. Subsequently, Sino-Indian ties deteriorated sharply after a military clash along their disputed Himalayan border in 2020.

Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks on the sidelines of a BRICS summit in Russia in October that led to a thaw. The giant Asian neighbours are now slowly defusing tensions that have hampered business relations and travel between the two countries.

Nevermind putting a nuclear reactor on the moon, prioritize bringing back our pharmaceutical industry to Ameica.

It’s suicidal to leave it in the hands of China and India.

Trump has himself a hammer, and apparently, everything looks like a nail to him

I don’t know what Trump is trying to accomplish here. Maybe there is a method to the madness, but I have yet to see where this is all going to lead.

Good, let China outsource their computer customer service to India and see if they can understand the dialect.

“It’s suicidal to leave it in the hands of China and India.”

Wallstreet disagrees with you.

This is Trump’s fault and his causes for it were unnecessary.

Well, it certainly doesn't appear to be about trade deals---more like it's just acting on a whim when people do stuff that he doesn't like. https://x.com/rareinfinitive/status/1952931091997716808

Also, during his press conference yesterday, Trump was asked about the billions in trade we are still engaging in with Russia (uranium and fertilizer). He acted like he didn't know anything about it, which was pretty embarrassing.

Strange, China and India were fighting against each other on their mutual border not long ago.

China and India are part of BRICS. It was inevitable that they get along again at least enough for the heads of state to talk to each other about BRICS. Don’t let Reuters trick you into thinking that Trump’s tariffs are the only reason they’d be talking.

I believe that India is in sort of an internal dilemma.

The old guys want to maintain their isolation while the younger guys want to become a real part of the world trade business reality.

India has some fantastic companies that can grow significantly if allowed. The old men fear change

India’s space program boasts Mars orbiters and in 2023 became the first nation to do a lunar south pole landing. They plan a Venus orbiter by 2035.

China’s space program maybe most impressive is a planned Mars sample return mission in 2028. They have their own space station in orbit and manned for the last 4 yrs. They also plan an asteroid deflection test for planetary defense before 2030.

Modi decided to go to Beijing for the first time in six years. It may all be a coincidence, but the timing would indicate otherwise

It was our own government’s tax policy that took away the tax incentives that kept the companies in Puerto Rico. Another Clinton debacle.
