Texas Dems ripped for 'cartoonishly dumb' strategy to flee to blue state notorious for gerrymandering

Texas Democrats are preventing quorum needed for Monday's vote on maps that could add 5 Republican congressional seats

...

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker is rolling out the red carpet for Democrat state lawmakers who fled Texas

...

The lawmakers fled Texas in order to prevent the quorum needed in the Republican-dominated state legislature to vote on Monday on the new redistricting maps, which passed a committee vote this past weekend along party lines.

...

The redistricting push in Texas is part of a broader effort by the GOP across the country to keep control of the House and cushion losses elsewhere in the country, as the party in power traditionally faces political headwinds and loses seats in midterm elections.

But veteran Republican strategist Matt Whitlock argued that the decision by most of the Democratic lawmakers to head to Illinois - with a few others decamping in two other blue states, New York and Massachusetts - was "cartoonishly dumb."

Tom Bevan, the RealClearPolitics co-founder and president, wrote on X, "The idea that Texas Democrats would flee to Illinois, a state where Dems have abused gerrymandering to comical levels, is perfection."

"To protest ‘partisan gerrymandering’ Texas Democrats are fleeing to…Illinois," Republican Missouri Senator Eric Scmitt wrote on X. "You can’t make this up."

...

Whitlock, a longtime GOP communicator and veteran of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, questioned the optics of the Texas Democrats fleeing to Illinois, which he called "the Mecca of partisan Gerrymandering."

...

Redistricting typically takes place at the start of each decade, based on the latest U.S. Census data. Mid-decade redistricting is uncommon—but not without precedent.

...

Republicans are also mulling mid-decade redistricting that might give the GOP a couple of more House seats in red states such as Florida, Missouri, and Indiana.

Democrats. The “Wile E. Coyote” class of modern times. But, but, they’re ‘eddikated’.

With the Illinois governor being who he is, I'm surprised they went to hide out there.

I mean, wouldn't they be concerned that there wouldn't be any food left for them to survive the time away?

It would be funny if they all return to find their homes taken over by squatters.

Nothing says, “I believe in democracy” like running away because you know your side is going to lose the vote.

Are the repubs posting in memes or putting in ads, billboards etc., maps of some of the insane democrat gerrymandered districts?

Its true as a Chicago resident, Illinois has the most egregiously created Pro democratic confessional districts one cannot even imagine.

https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/a-tale-of-two-midwestern-gerrymanders-illinois-and-ohio/

https://theconversation.com/stop-criticizing-bizarrely-shaped-voting-districts-they-might-not-be-gerrymandered-after-all-86510

That said the to the victor goes the spoils and since even in a geographiclly large state area size wise

Chicagoland has over 10 million people in a state of 12 million people and the majority of Chicago are live long democrats but also 2/3rd’s of the population of Chicagoland live in the sprawling Chicago population lives in the Suburbs. Lake, Will, DuPage, Kane counties used to be Republican counties but no longer. Only McHenry county still is and only slightly now. An the Inner Burbs of Cook county are over 5 million people. Trust me there are independent, Libratarians and conservatives here but we are simply outnumbered.

I wish that I could post those before and after maps but I’m a newbie here and not sure how to post pictures or graphics. Anyone interested in teaching me, I’m your student.

Whether or not it’s cartoonishly dumb depends on whether they can get away with it.

Gov Abbott, do what you must; IL voters, are you seeing, yet, what the ‘RATs are doing to you?
And all to hold on to their racist, fraudulent “redistricting” based on false census numbers.
It is deeply hard to keep from hating these people- every day.

The average Texan IMO is angered by these attempts to break quorum. Texas history is replete with events such as Gonzales, The Alamo, and San Jacinto, which displayed the heroism of Texas men and women. These Democrats are spitting in the faces of these heroes.
