The United States has joined Israel in accusing Sir Keir Starmer of “rewarding Hamas” after he declared the UK will recognise Palestine in September unless Benjamin Netanyahu’s government makes peace.
The Prime Minister issued the ultimatum to his Israeli counterpart after an emergency meeting of his Cabinet.
Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the US State department, said Sir Keir’s remarks were a “slap in the face for the victims of October 7” which “rewards Hamas”.
“It allows it to continue. It gives one group hope, and that’s Hamas. It is a rewarding of that kind of behaviour,” she said, adding: “There’s one group that benefits from the images, the reality of the horribleness, and that’s Hamas. And so there’s a reason why they don’t cooperate and stop.”
On Tuesday night, the Israeli foreign ministry said: “Israel rejects the statement by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
“The shift in the British government’s position at this time, following the French move and internal political pressures, constitutes a reward for Hamas and harms efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and a framework for the release of hostages.”
The announcement followed months of pressure from Sir Keir’s own Cabinet colleagues and MPs to move to a policy of immediate recognition.
It is likely to see the Government face pressure to go further, with critics to Sir Keir’s Left warning that statehood should not be used as a “bargaining chip”.
Sir Keir’s announcement was welcomed by the government of France after Emmanuel Macron, the French president, confirmed last week that his own country would also recognise Palestine.
