A previously unreported order by Elon Musk to cut satellite communications over a portion of Ukraine disrupted a counteroffensive by Kyiv in the autumn of 2022. Reuters investigated the billionaire's order and its implications for countries increasingly reliant on his Starlink internet service.
KYIV - During a pivotal push by Ukraine to retake territory from Russia in late September 2022, Elon Musk gave an order that disrupted the counteroffensive and dented Kyiv’s trust in Starlink, the satellite internet service the billionaire provided early in the war to help Ukraine’s military maintain battlefield connectivity.
According to three people familiar with the command, Musk told a senior engineer at the California offices of SpaceX, the Musk venture that controls Starlink, to cut coverage in areas including Kherson, a strategic region north of the Black Sea that Ukraine was trying to reclaim.
“We have to do this,” Michael Nicolls, the Starlink engineer, told colleagues upon receiving the order, one of these people said. Staffers complied, the three people told Reuters, deactivating at least a hundred Starlink terminals, their hexagon-shaped cells going dark on an internal map of the company’s coverage. The move also affected other areas seized by Russia, including some of Donetsk province further east.
Upon Musk’s order, Ukrainian troops suddenly faced a communications blackout, according to a Ukrainian military official, an advisor to the armed forces, and two others who experienced Starlink failure near the front lines. Soldiers panicked, drones surveilling Russian forces went dark, and long-range artillery units, reliant on Starlink to aim their fire, struggled to hit targets.
As a result, the Ukrainian military official and the military advisor said, troops failed to surround a Russian position in the town of Beryslav, east of Kherson, the administrative center of the region of the same name. “The encirclement stalled entirely,” said...

Classic Nancy Pelosi wrap-up smear.
Anyway you slice it, without 40 some Western nations arms, armament and $$$ Billions in taxpayers money and welfare, Ukraine is Toast.
Their military put up a good fight- but their dishonesty and corruption wiped out any chances to win. It took awhile for the people to finally protest openly on the streets, too late and too little.
The corrupted little man in Green is now slated to be given the Mussolini treatment.
Pretty stupid to rely on comms that you don’t control for military action. As far as I know Space X is not being paid for the service so even if true (which I highly doubt) they have pretty much put themselves in this situation where they can be arbitrarily shutoff.
Flip That Switch then I’ll

Elon Playing with Fire?
What Starlink doink?
What Musk subsidies doink?
Your true hatred of MAGA and your asslampreyness of Zelya come out...
President Trump killed Musk’s subsidies, Ivan.
Cutting off service affects any outfit in the area, UK or Russian.
This is not a smear, dumb shit.
I remember this coverage as it occurred. Ukrainian infantry teams crossing an invisible line instantly lost their service. This was when Elon was whining about potentially losing his FCC subsidies of 1 billion. I believe the real motive was to force Biden to return the subsidies. Elon lost the subsidies anyway.
Elon gets EV credits per sale and carbon credits, not to mention a free hand at burning billions of dollars with exploding Starships that will never work because they’re physically too big. The EV and carbon credits are the only things that kept Tesla profitable these last few quarters.
You’re wrong. In fact, Ukraine is not only paying for the service, Elon is gouging them with each government account costing upwards of 3,500 a month (for you or me, it would cost $110). Tens of thousands of terminals were also purchased by Ukrainian civilians and donated to the front lines, all at their own cost.
This refers to the Kherson offensive in 2022 when Ukraine took back a ton of land. During the height of the offense, Elon shut off Starlink, resulting in unnecessary deaths. He has blood on his hands.
Well, he ALREADY had blood on his hands, what with shitty FSD and low quality builds burning people alive in vehicles with recessed handles that firefighters can’t bust open.
Ukraine is now one of the biggest arms manufacturers in Europe, and they are no more corrupt than the USA or any other country, other than in the masturbatory dreams of the Gateway Pundit imagining Zelenskyy with a dozen mansions.
Anonymously sourced stories are always smears, [Expletive Deleted].
Elon Musk @elonmusk
The hell with it … even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we’ll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free

I guess we should write of all your posts as you’re an anonymous conspiracy theorist who picks and chooses what news articles he believes based on who they’re smearing, schmuck.
Actually, I think Biden told Musk to turn off the Starlinks during the Kherson offensive to allow the retreating Russians to cross the Dnipro. Putin told Biden he was going to use nukes if the Russians were wiped out during that retreat.
