What AI's insatiable appetite for power means for our future
Fox News ^ | y Kurt Knutsson

Every time you ask ChatGPT a question, to generate an image or let artificial intelligence summarize your email, something big is happening behind the scenes. Not on your device, but in sprawling data centers filled with servers, GPUs and cooling systems that require massive amounts of electricity.

The modern AI boom is pushing our power grid to its limits. ChatGPT alone processes roughly 1 billion queries per day, each requiring data center resources far beyond what’s on your device.

In fact, the energy needed to support artificial intelligence, cloud computing and even crypto mining is rising so quickly that it has already delayed the retirement of several coal plants in the U.S., with more delays expected. Some experts warn that the AI arms race is outpacing the infrastructure meant to support it. Others argue it could spark long-overdue clean energy innovation.

AI isn't just reshaping apps and search engines. It's also reshaping how we build, fuel and regulate the digital world. The race to scale up AI capabilities is accelerating faster than most infrastructure can handle, and energy is becoming the next major bottleneck.

Here’s a look at how AI is changing the energy equation, and what it might mean for our climate future.

Why AI uses so much power, and what drives the demand

Running artificial intelligence at scale requires enormous computational power. Unlike traditional internet activity, which mostly involves pulling up stored information, AI tools perform intensive real-time processing. Whether training massive language models or responding to user prompts, AI systems rely on specialized hardware like GPUs (graphics processing unit) that consume far more power than legacy servers. GPUs are designed to handle many calculations in parallel, which is perfect for the matrix-heavy workloads that power generative AI and deep learning systems.

To give you an idea of scale: one Nvidia H100 GPU, commonly used in AI training, consumes up to 700 watts on its own. Training a single large AI model like GPT-4 may require thousands of these GPUs running continuously for weeks.

Multiply that across dozens of models and hundreds of data centers, and the numbers escalate quickly. A traditional data center rack might use around 8 kilowatts (kW) of power. An AI-optimized rack using GPUs can demand 45-55 kW or more. Multiply that across an entire building or campus of racks, and the difference is staggering.

Cooling all that hardware adds another layer of energy demand. Keeping AI servers from overheating accounts for 30-55% of a data center’s total power use. Advanced cooling methods like liquid immersion are helping, but scaling those across the industry will take time.

Not to worry. Once the oceans rise enough to inundate all of the data centers, it'll solve the cooling problem.

Media, politicians, pundits, lobbyists and Wall Street are all running around spinning fantastic stories bout solar, wind, nuclear, hydrogen, rare earths, China etc...

The fact is this energy demand will be met by natural gas.

The USA already has 2 million miles of pipelines, is the largest gas producer in the world, gas turbines are relatively fast and easy to install, and they are produced in the USA.

It’s the fastest, cheapest, most simple solution. Its boring, and there’s no new narrative to sell, so no one talks about it.

I suspect AI has already solved its power consumption problem.

Namely, AI will shut off all air conditioning systems in homes and businesses during the summer and shut off all heating systems in homes and businesses in the winter.

And people will all live in caves where it is cool during the summer and easily heated with a small wood fire in the winter.

And I did not even have to ask ChatGBT for its solution. (lol)

If an AI datacenter consumes about 200kW (24-hours/day would be 4,800 kWh/day), it'd need a solar array that's 10 times as large as my 20kW array on my roof, just to power the building, during just the peak solar hour of the day. If I was building the data center I might consider it as a reduction of my overall power costs. But in the end to keep things running you still need hydrocarbons for when the sun isn't shining.

So the power grid infrastructure is needed all the same as though solar isn't there.

Well done... Absolutely... Occam’s Razor applies. They will have to steal power to power it all. And then when there is no more sources left they will have us on exercise bikes driving generators...

lolzzzz...... On youtube I see guys with top rated graphics cards. They need to use 1000 watt power supplies, because the graphics cards draw 300 watts on up.
AI chip server farms are heavy power draws, same as their cousins the Nvidia graphics cards, going for a few thousand dollars. You want a top gaming rig. You will be spending 5-10 thousand dollars, with the fastest 2TB NVMEs and lots of memory. 64GB minimum.

What a great solution. And AI will resurrect Biden to allow us to import an illegal alien to pedal the ‘exercise bikes driving generators’ for us.

This trend is just as stupid and unsustainable as all cars being electric. It will be impossible without huge sacrifices to mankind. It will definitely help with the overpopulation problem... To power this people will have to go...

Questions to consider:

What happens if a drone drops in for a visit on the power plant supporting the AI data center or the center itself?

How big and powerful does the drone have to be to royally mess things up?

What’s the impact on whatever the AI center supports?

If it’s a choice between your comfort and AI (which they will claim is for National Security purposes), you roast or freeze in your house. Easy decision for upcoming Democrat and RINO leaders.
