U.S. Air Force’s Global Strike Command (AFGSC) has ordered an indefinite “pause” in the use of M18 pistols following a recent fatal incident at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. This comes just two weeks after the disclosure of an FBI report that added to long-standing concerns about the ability of Sig Sauer P320-series pistols, a family that includes the M18, to fire without their triggers being pulled. Just days after that report became public, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a permanent ban on the use of P320s. TWZ just recently published an in-depth story on the FBI report and the fallout from it, including Sig’s refutation of the testing results, which you can find here.
“Air Force Global Strike Command has paused use of the M18 Modular Handgun System, effective July 21, 2025, until further notice,” AFGSC spokesperson Charles “Moose” Hoffman has now confirmed to TWZ. “This decision was made following a tragic incident at F.E. Warren AFB, WY, on July 20, 2025, which resulted in the death of a Security Forces Airman.”

Why did the industry move away from perfection?
I have a Beretta 92 FS with the decocker, carried it as M9, safe as can be.
I have a M18 with external safety, it’s a range gun. OK by me.
Don’t know about that, but my 1911 I always trust.
Now to find out if the new stuff is the right stuff.
Was issued an M9 and HATED it.
That said never saw any safety issues or ADs.
“Was issued an M9 and HATED it.”
Why?
I still don’t understand why our services went away from the 1911. Proven design and tough weapon. I have one from 1913 that works very well.
2.5 lbs or 40 oz fully loaded had something to do with that, it’s a solid chunk of steel to haul around.
Doesn’t the M-18 have an external safety?
Too gaudy and unbalanced. The size of a .45 but a 9mm.
If I’m going with something that big it’ll be .45 G21. If I’m running a 9, it’s a G17, 19 or 26. More reliable too.
My only dislike with the M9 was that it's 9mm. Other than that, it was near perfect - weight, fit in hand, balance, trigger pull (including the first DA pull), recoil, ease of loading, etc. I liked that it was SA/DA with the decocker as well.
Yeah, it could use the modern rails and accessories but as they beat into our heads, it's a weapon for escorting prisoners, classified and crypto couriers, and for the Security Forces in the cars or doing gate duty, not a combat weapon. While I was in, AFSOC was using the .45 ACP and not the 9mm.
They were looking at weapons for home base or Military Operations Other Than War (MOOTWA).
They figured very few soldiers would need a sidearm and that a 9mm was sufficient for the few who did. Those who needed a .45 could still get them issued, especially if they were using suppressors.
The glock system, where the weapon isnt fully cocked until you pull the trigger and 3 passive safeties are deactivated works quite well. There was a bit of a learning curve early on, with the lighter trigger pull. But much of that was due to the fact that any gun will fire if you holster with your finger in the triggerguard.🤨

The military should have gone with the Glock G19x. I had never shot a Glock before, only 1911s. My friend let me borrow his G19 and it was just as accurate as my fancy 1911 target gun. And it never jammed.
By 1985 they were rode hard and put up wet. There’s only so many times you can rebuild a gun and by ‘85 they were at the end of their service life. The reason they went away from the 1911 was threefold. The first reason was ammo compatibility with NATO. All the NATO countries used 9MM. Secondly, the Beretta was double action, and could be carried hammer down on a loaded chamber and still be ready to shoot. The third reason was ammo capacity. 1911’s carry 8 rounds. The Beretta M9 had a capacity of 15.

I always believed the SA/DA with decock lever was the pinnacle of pistol engineering.
Why did the industry move away from perfection?
that’s my carry to this day.
Love my G21;
Some people say that training with a single / double action took longer and was more difficult for people, because of the difference in trigger pull.
Striker fired stuff like glocks, the p320, have one trigger pull, so supposedly easier to learn to shoot consistantly.
It basically comes down with services to having the minimal practice and shooting time, for someone to qualify with the firearms.
Striker fired firearms also tend to have fewer parts and are also cheaper to produce.
I also liked 1911s before converting to Glocks, but yeah, just as accurate and no comparision in reliability, durability, ease of add-ons etc.
Big problem with 1911s is unless it’s a Colt or Springfield and you’re running 230 ball - how it was designed - they’re usually either dicey or need a lots of tweaking.
Never liked striker fired pistols.
Still have a Glock, but only out of utility, not enjoyment.
