House ending session early as Republicans clash over Epstein vote

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Mike Johnson is rebuffing pressure to act on the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, instead sending members home early for a month-long break from Washington after the week’s legislative agenda was upended by Republican members who are clamoring for a vote.

Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, said Tuesday morning that he wants to give the White House “space” to release the Epstein information on its own, despite the bipartisan push for legislation that aims to force the release of more documents.

“There’s no purpose for the Congress to push an administration to do something they’re already doing,” Johnson said at his weekly press conference, his last before lawmakers depart Washington on Wednesday for their traditional August recess.

The speaker’s stance did little to alleviate the intra-party turmoil unfolding on Capitol Hill as many of President Donald Trump’s supporters demand that the administration meet its promises to publicly release a full accounting of the sex trafficking investigation into Epstein, who killed himself in his New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial. Under pressure from right-wing online influencers, as well as voters back home, rank-and-file Republicans are demanding that the House intervene in the matter.

“The public’s not going to let this die, and rightfully so,” said Rep. Ralph Norman, a South Carolina Republican.

Johnson’s control of the House is under threat

The dynamic left Johnson with slipping control of his Republican conference and several crucial committees. Even before Johnson spoke Tuesday morning, a Republican-controlled subcommittee of the House Committee on Oversight was advancing a resolution to subpoena Epstein’s former girlfriend, Ghislaine Maxwell, for a deposition.

Johnson decided to end the House’s legislative business early this week after he essentially lost control of the powerful House Rules Committee, which sends bills to the floor for debates and votes...

Is this a “real” recess, where Trump could make recess appointments? That would clear the backlog.

I’m sorry, what? Trump told everyone to stop talking about it.

They are such a bunch of nimrods. Now how long is their break, till Christmas or something? I know; they have to come back and push through a continuing resolution in the fall, again, in a hurry because they haven’t done their work beforehand.

There are no files.
There are no videos.
Nobody was trafficked.
Epstein killed himself.
Nothing to see here.
People who ask questions are “bad people” (the president’s own words)

Maybe I’m diving into the lions den, but I think I’m gonna go with Johnson on this one.
Perhaps Trump is still playing chess with it.

So the Biden DOJ pulled out everything they could to jail Trump. Even making up crimes to try in front of a rigged NY Court. Yet somehow they did not use the Epstein silver bullet that would have ended Trump political career forever.

Just how f’in stupid are the screaming clowns in Conservative Inc?

Simple questions. Suppose the information is released and it all what you fantasize it is.

What going to happen next?

Nothing is what happens next.

You all have worked yourself up into this imaginary bubble world where you think Epstein's list is going to be the magic silver bullet where you finally get all the people you hate in politics.

It won't

Law doesn't work like you wanna be lynch mobbers in Conservative Inc thinks it does. Being on a list is not a crime. You have to build cases against each and everyone on the list and prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that they are guilty of crimes.

As we saw in the Diddy case, rich people buy their way out of prison with high priced legal teams.

So Conservative Inc has worked itself up into hysterics about something that is going to be completely meaningless in the end. Meanwhile real things that actually are important, like the Senate approving Trump's judicial appointments, are ignored so Conservative inc can hyperventilate about nothing

‘instead sending members home early for a month-long break from Washington after the week’s legislative agenda”

I wonder how long a typical work week is for members of Congre$$.

“ I wonder how long a typical work week is for members of Congre$$.”

A typical work week is Tuesday through Thursday. Someone comes into the House or Senate on Monday and gavels in a session. A couple of people might speak and then the session is gaveled out. Repeat on Friday. This is called a pro forma session.

It prevents the President from being able to make any recess appointments.
