KelTec Gun Factory In Rock Springs Aims To Churn Out 1,000 Pistols Per Week
Cowboy State Daily ^ | 7/21/25 | Mark Heinz

Posted on 07/22/2025 9:54:29 AM PDT by CFW

The operation was years in the making. The Florida-based company announced plans for its KelTec West factory in Rock Springs in 2022.

Wyoming’s Second Amendment-friendly culture and politics played a big part in choosing Rock Springs when the company decided to expand its operating capacity, KelTec West plant operations manager Chris Williams told Cowboy State Daily.

“At the time (2022), Florida was teetering purple,” he said about the political climate there. “Wyoming is a solid red state, and it looks like it’s going to stay solid for decades to come.”

Other firearms companies that recently set up shop in Wyoming, such as Weatherby in Sheridan, have cited similar reasons for setting up shop in the Cowboy State.

KelTec set up its factory in a 33,000-square-foot building on Blairtown Road in Rock Springs. The facility was built in 2005 and previously used by the oil and gas industry.

Unusual Pistol Design For now, the KelTec West factory will focus on producing PR57 pistols.

The company plans to build other firearms in Rock Springs in the future, but Williams wasn’t at liberty to say what those might be.

The PR57 is designed to fill a growing demand for a simple, lightweight, concealable self-defense firearm for beginners, the company says. The pistol was designed around the “rule of threes” as it applies to self-defense scenarios.

Meaning, most civilian self-defense shootings happen within 3 yards, last three seconds or less, and involve three or fewer shots fired.

It’s unusual insofar as it doesn’t take detachable magazines like most modern semiautomatic pistols.

Instead, it has a fixed magazine in the pistol’s handle, which is fed by pushing rounds down into the magazine through 10-round stripper clips.

The magazine can take two stripper clips, for a total capacity of 20 rounds, Williams said.

P380 here. Polished the ramp with 3M scotch brite when I first got it and the extended mag to fit my hand. Never had a misfeed or jam. Love it. Everyone that shoots it wants one. We look for them at Gun Shows but they are getting scarce.

Store it in a dry, low humidity room. The spring easily rusts out. Happened to me on two of them.

PR57 is a great concept, whether the quality of manufacturing can live up to it is TBD.

The magazine can take two stripper clips, for a total capacity of 20 rounds, Williams said.

So it would be illegal in NYS and CA...10 round max.

I don’t know if New York or California gun laws would account for a non-detachable internal box magazine, but it’s a safe bet that you’re correct.

Good to know. Not a real problem here in Central/West TX, but I will definitely keep an eye on it. Thanks, FRiend.

Keltec makes great stuff..
That tend to need a bit of fluff and buff to make them 100%

But the 5.7/ .17hmr, etc.. are great target rounds. But, they are just hot 22s.

The whole point of the 5.7 and the FNs that spawned them were as AP rounds.

Ballistic round, long distance accuracy, 20rd capacity. I don't see the pistol designed for what they claim, but I like it.

Police are trained to keep shooting until the taget drops.

A moderately trained civilian.. under stress, hopefully, moving. Is likely to miss quite a bit.

Or depending on training, conditions, movement of shooter and target, hitting a vital organ that drops the target immediately are NOT at all graranteed. a little 22 cal bullet is a lot smaller than a 38/9 or 45. smaller bullets make smaller holes.

having more bullets on tap is ALWAYS better.

P11 here. With the factory 12 round mag it’s a P13 :)

Not a range gun.

Is the P17 also stripper fed? I like that feature. Much faster than reloading detachable magazines.

Honestly? As for bottleneck rounds I really like the old school Tokarev TT 7.62x25. As with these you just better be sure of what might be behind the intended target...

They’re just gearing up to fill back orders to the cartels.

Aren’t they the ones who make the famed Yeet Cannon and the cool folding PCC?

Magazines need a hole drilled in the side for a rivet to stop you from loading over 10 rounds. Once home, pop out the rivet and business as usual!

My first AR-15, purchased in 1070 had the 20 round magazines blocked to 5 rounds. I disassembled the magazines, took out the block and was now back to 20 rounds.
Our local farm and ranch store has AR-15 magazines for 30 rounds. They will also take only 10 rounds of a different caliber.

Perfect EDC but NOT fun to shoot. Beretta PX4 Storm is a dream to fire but a boat anchor to carry around so Kel-Tec it is.

I agree that Keltec produces some of the more innovative and exotic firearms, but their products frequently run into reliability issues.
