“The scale of desertion in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine continues to remain at a high level, writes Ukrainian journalist Vladimir Boyko.

According to Boyko, in the first half of 2025, 107,672 new criminal cases were opened for unauthorized abandonment of a unit and desertion, which gives 16-20 thousand officially registered cases per month.

In total, 230,804 such criminal cases have been opened since the beginning of hostilities. Thus, the number of cases filed in 2025 is almost half of all cases of desertions in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 3.5 years.

“The real picture is much worse, because until October 2024, the GBR systematically refused to provide information to the ERDR about the facts of unauthorized abandonment of a unit or place of service, and the commanders of military units even had to appeal the investigators’ inaction in court,” the journalist writes.
Boyko also writes that out of more than 100,000 cases, only a little more than 3,500 defendants were officially charged, while only a little more than 1,000 people went to court. As a result, criminal cases for murder and desertion are simply not investigated because of their huge number.

“As a result, there is no infantry in the Armed Forces of Ukraine today. At all. The infantry is either on the run, in hospitals, or in a cemetery,” Boyko writes.”
