Rep Yakym introduces bill that would keep workers on strike from getting unemployment benefits

The legislation introduced by Yakym is titled the Securing Help for Involuntary Employment Loss and Displacement (SHIELD) Act.

Congressman Rudy Yakym, R-Ind., on Thursday discussed legislation he introduced that would keep unemployment benefits from workers who choose to go on strike.

"We've introduced a few bills dealing with unemployment insurance, because a big part of what I believe is that we should protect it for people who actually need it," Yakym said on the "Just the News, No Noise" TV show.

Yakym explained that there are progressive states that allow workers who choose to go on strike to collect unemployment benefits, and it isn't fair to individuals who are actually unemployed.

"Liberal states like Washington and Oregon do things like allow workers who choose to go on strike to collect unemployment benefits," he said. "Why should hard-working Americans have to pay for unemployment benefits for workers who make the choice to go on strike?"

The legislation introduced by Yakym is titled the Securing Help for Involuntary Employment Loss and Displacement (SHIELD) Act.

“Choosing not to work is just that, a choice,” he wrote in a press release. “While far-left states like Oregon and Washington are busy handing out unemployment checks like participation trophies to anyone who walks off the job, the SHIELD Act puts an end to that nonsense. These radical policies disrupt the labor market, let workers walk off the job without consequences, and leave small businesses high and dry. If you choose to strike, you don’t get to collect a check from hardworking Americans, plain and simple.”

Taxpayer subsidy of labor union strikes. What could possibly go wrong?

The corrupt Democratic majority in Washington state recently passed a law that allows public union member to receive unemployment benefits while on strike.

These union members are the state democrat parties largest donors.

More taxpayer subsidy of labor union strikes. With kickback to the pols who will not approve the bill. Wash, rinse and repeat as many times needed before you blame Trump when it all collapses.

First reaction is “Well Duh!”, and then you remember that this is actually a tough political battle that has to be made for even simple common sense things.

This is popular. In fact, even the Democrat governor of Connecticut recently vetoed a bill trying to do the same thing.

I’m k on a good union and I agree with this. If the union voluntarily strikes, you’re not unemployed, you’re just refusing to work.
I’m always in favor of doing “work to rule”/make life difficult for the company IF you have to. If good faith negotiations are happening, you keep working.

"...this is actually a tough political battle that has to be made for even simple common sense things..."

No kidding. And when you look at the stupid, silly, inane knife fight that just took place for $9 Billion of cuts to things that 90% of Americans would probably agree need to be cut...that tells the story.

If there is any hope for our Republic, it is a long hard slog ahead.

Workers have the right to go on strike. It’s a free country. But there must be a level playing field! Laws that give striking workers unemployment benefits tilt things way too much in their favor.

Some goes with laws that prohibit employers from permanently replacing striking workers. These laws are very destructive in the long term.

However, if only state money is involved then it’s a 10A thing. DC should stay out of it.
