NYC Mayor’s Race: New poll shows Mamdani leading field, Eric Adams gaining popularity among Republicans

A Monday poll by Data for Progress gives new insight into the 2025 New York City mayoral election as the field of candidates for the November general election remains in flux.

The Data for Progress poll shows Queens Assembly Member Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic primary winner, leading the field with 40% of polled individuals marking the 33-year-old as their top choice for mayor. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who appears to be nearing a decision on an independent campaign after losing to Mamdani and is expected to commit to the race in the coming days, is polling in second place with 24%.

Mayor Eric Adams, who is running on an independent line, polled third at 15%, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is in fourth at 14%. Independent candidate Jim Walden is in fifth place with 1%; 5% of polled individuals remain unsure.

In individual favorability scores for each candidate, the Data for Progress poll shows Mamdani with the highest favorability among the five — and the only candidate with an overall positive favorability rating. Mamdani's favorability rating is 49-40, Cuomo's is 39-59, Adams' is 29-70, Sliwa's is 32-50, and Walden's is 9-15 (most polled individuals had not heard enough about the attorney to give their favorability, according to the poll.)

Mamdani's favorability rating of 49-40 is higher than that of the Democratic party itself, which scored at 49-49. The democratic socialist drew broad support in the primary election from progressives and young people fed up with the party establishment.

Adams, who is running for reelection following a five-count criminal campaign fraud indictment that was dismissed in April, announced ahead of the Democratic primary that he would instead run for reelection as an independent.

The Data for Progress poll showed the mayor gaining in popularity among Republicans as he runs on an increasingly centrist political line, hoping to court centrist Democrats and Republicans looking for an alternative to Mamdani.

Interesting that places like San Francisco are the sources of Mamdani’s outside campaign funding. The Commie has a lot of new friends.

We still have a situation where Cuomo, Adams and Sliwa are splitting the non-lunatic Left vote. If one or more of them don’t drop out, they will continue to do so and Mamdani will squeak through to win. If they really want to defeat him, one or two of them need to drop out. Of course, none of them want to do so and each thinks they are the strongest option. I’d suggest that Sliwa cuts a deal with Adams and then drops out. Or maybe Adams and Cuomo cut a deal. Having said all that, its probably good for the GOP for Mamdani to win so perhaps its good if all three of them stay in.

From your link:

In a four-way race, Mamdani (26 percent) is tied with Cuomo (23 percent) and Sliwa (22 percent), all within the margin of error. Adams is at 13 percent and 15 percent of voters are undecided.

I’m getting frustrated with the New York Republican party. Just look at the polls — Curtis Sliwa hasn’t even seriously advertised for his campaign yet, still — He is closing in on Mamdani in the poss.

Yet, all I’m hearing is — Sliwa should drop out and hand his support to Eric Adams for the good of the city !! In exchange, Adams should promise Sliwa a position in his administration.

The NYC GOP are giving up and not fighting anymore !!

NY City is a place built on skimmings from Wall Street financialization, massive debt, and the welfare state

Its taken a couple generations, but now a majority of people in NY City believe that “free sh**” from Heaven is real, and its only white people, unnamed capitalists, and Jews that are keeping them from getting it.

there is not much hope for NY City

How much of this polling and reporting that Madmani is leading the pack is BS and lies?

Vote your way into socialism, shoot your way out.

Zornah Madmani gets into the mayor’s office, really flouts the immigration law, gets arrested, tried and stripped of citizenship, and returned to Uganda or wherever, never to return to the US.

I think there are some in the GOP who want Mamdani to win and will vote for him, on the idiotic assumption Mamdani will win and make things in NYC so bad they will have a chance “next time”.

I remember some in the GOP who voted for Obama instead of McCain for the same reason. I did not like McCain, but Obama was absolutely worse.

I agree with you that the NYC GOP needs to fight and be a credible alternative. The issue is that a lot of people just don’t view Curtis Sliwa as a credible candidate. If the GOP had someone like Giuliani as its candidate, they’d probably be in the lead.

Mark Simone,a great NYC talk show host (and huge Trump supporter) said just today that a new poll shows Curtis Sliwa, the GOP nominee,in a statistical tie for the lead.

I agree 100%!

“Sliwa can’t win!” is a self-fulfilling prophesy.

You don’t know since McCain lost. I’d bet he would have been as bad.
