Australia will refuse any US request to join a “hypothetical” conflict with China over Taiwan and won’t make any advance commitment, the defence industry minister, Pat Conroy, has said, amid reports Washington is seeking such promises in discussions over the Aukus submarines.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, also pushed back on such a request, alluding to America’s own position of so-called “strategic ambiguity” on whether the US would militarily respond in a conflict over Taiwan. He said Australia wanted to see “peace and security” in the region.
Following multiple reports this week that the Pentagon was seeking guarantees from Australia and other allies about how they would respond in the event of a conflict in the Indo-Pacific, Conroy said any commitment to war would be the decision of the Australian government of the day.
The Financial Times reported on Saturday that Elbridge Colby – the US under-secretary of defence for policy, who is also undertaking a review of the Aukus pact which would see America share nuclear-powered submarines with Australia – was asking Japan and Australia to reveal how they would act in a potential US-China war over Taiwan.
The Sydney Morning Herald separately quoted a senior US defence official, who reportedly said Washington was seeking “a clear sense of what we can expect from Australia”.
Contacted for comment, a Pentagon spokesperson referred Guardian Australia to a post on X from Colby on Sunday (AEST) which referenced the FT article. In his post, Colby wrote that the US policy position included “urging allies to step up their defense spending and other efforts related to our collective defense”.
“This has been a hallmark of President Trump’s strategy – in Asia as in Europe where it has already been tremendously successful.
“Of course, some among our allies might not welcome frank conversations.

We should have done the sub deal with Japan.
I can’t believe the Aussie put Albanese back in. Let me guess, women-abortion.
Ha! Australia is China’s aircraft carrier...

Australia is just a mining colony of China. So it makes sense that they’d have no problem with China taking Taiwan with 750,000 troops,50 warships and 200 bombers.

It’s Colby that has no problem with that. He’s playing armchair isolationist shell games here and the Aussies, who have actual skin in this game as residents of the region, aren’t joining in.
Anthony Albanese: Chinese puppet and best friend to Jew-hating Islamists.
The Australian left has embraced China and has found China to be more to its liking and more compatible to its values than the United States. In a generation, China will dominate Australia politically and economically if not culturally.
And the Aussies will have only themselves to blame.
Aussie gov’mt sold themselves out years ago. As bad as the Uk. Uhh, UK as in United Kingdom, not that crappy little satrappy in southern europe.
No promise, no nuclear subs and no commitment by the US to defend Australia from China. Plus 100% tariffs on Aussie goods.
Just hoping the dragon eats them last.
Would they refuse a Chinese request to join a “hypothetical” conflict with China over Taiwan?
Hopefully we’ll never find out...
I do imagine Trump’s response will be something like this.
I wish the Aussies the best of luck. They’ll need it.
