The historic Grand Canyon North Rim Lodge is gone.

Historic Grand Canyon Lodge among dozens of buildings burned in wildfire; chlorine gas leak hampers firefight Dozens of buildings inside the North Rim of the Grand Canyon have been destroyed, including a historic lodge, as a chlorine gas leak has forced firefighter evacuations from the Dragon Bravo Fire. WWW.FOXWEATHER.COM https://www.foxweather.com/weather-news/dragon-bravo-wildfire-destroys-grand-canyon-lodge-chlorine-gas-leak Firefighters have been unable to fight the Dragon Bravo Fire, burning on the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, and were forced to evacuate because of a chlorine gas leak.

Among the buildings burned by the Dragon Bravo Fire on Friday afternoon was the area's water treatment facility, which in turn released a plume of chlorine gas, national park officials said.

Park authorities immediately evacuated firefighters from the North Rim and all hikers from the inner canyon, as chlorine is heavier than air and will settle into lower elevations.

NOAA says that nearby communities don't need to worry about the chlorine gas and that they are tracking its spread.

National Park officials say preliminary assessments indicate 50 - 80 structures have been lost, including the Grand Canyon Lodge and numerous historic cabins in the developed area. Other buildings lost include National Park Service administrative buildings and visitor facilities.

The fire has been going for more than a week now, being sparked by lightning on the 4th of July. Firefighters have had to stop the aerial fire retardant drops because of the gas leak.

The [Dragon Bravo] fire now sits at 5,000 acres and remains 0% contained. Dozens of firefighters are assigned to battle the blaze.

Crews are also battling the White Sage Fire, which is burning just north of the North Rim and has consumed over 10,000 acres.

Pray for our forest firefighters out West!

Fighting a fire that went out of control ‘cause you don’t preemptively clear brush under the trees is a tried and true method of clearing land for other uses.

See PacifcPalisades in LA.

Fire source is irrelevent. Lightening, bum with a campfire, car exhaust, etc. A wildfire is WILD ‘cause of mis-management.

it was built by the Utah Parks Company, a subsidiary of the Union Pacific Railroad. I don’t know how much taxpayer money was used, if any, either in the original construction or in the rebuilding after the 1932 fire.

I think many of these structures were built by entities such as that originally and then make it to taxpayer owned via donation or other means. They are all taxpayer funded now.

Perhaps, but what we were talking about was the building of the Grand Canyon Lodge.

I was there 30 years ago. The vibe was unmatched. Iconic Western lodge no doubt built by the CCC. I wish them luck trying to recapture that ambiance.

Don’t forget that Trump is a builder. I believe that the Administration will ensure that the reconstructed lodge will be great.

Lightning started fire. Because it was “natural” they decided to let it burn. Then they lost control of it.

That's how I understand it. Didn't predict high winds (again) that let it get out of control.

The skills to recreate that building as it existed don’t hardly exist anymore.
