New CEO Lip-Bu Tan is streamlining Intel’s operations and reducing spending in response to a sharp downturn in sales and technological setbacks that rendered Intel an also-ran in an industry it helped invent.
Intel had been firing workers all last week but then Friday evening came word the company plans to lay off nearly 2,400 Oregon workers.
Intel’s position in the industry has slumped badly. The company’s market value is around $100 billion, about half what it was just 18 months ago. Nevertheless, the company is hugely important to Oregon as one of its largest private employers.
Across the U.S., Intel had disclosed plans to lay off at least 3,999 workers by the middle of July at sites in Oregon, California, Arizona and Texas. The company has indicated additional layoffs could continue for several weeks.

Apple was having enough problems with Broadwell, that Apple decided to move macOS to in-house designs.
I’m paying for an Office 365 family plan. I think it’s 5 seats, for $100 per year. Each seat gets a terabyte of OneDrive space, with Office thrown in for free.
Put the $99 into MSFT stock instead, after a while the profits will pay your subscription.
Too bad about Intel, I wish them well. For my purposes Dell with Intel processors are the best. During Covid19 Dell churned out massive numbers of Latitude laptops with i5-i7 11th Gen Intel CPUs. I just bought Latitude 5520 @15.6” from eBay for less than $200. 400 NITS display to also use outdoors in the shade. These 11th gen Latitudes also come in 14” and 13.3” display sizes. I see 13.3” 16GB ram going for $100 eBay.
5520 with i7-1185G7 with 2x usb-c that you can charge it with or connect DisplayPort monitors to. HDMI port on 5520 too.
