Trump offers new visa program for migrant workers after facing backlash from farmers: report
New York Post ^ | July 11, 2025 | Jennie Taer and Josh Christenson

The Trump administration is launching a new visa program for migrant workers as farmers and hotel owners express concerns that their labor force is being threatened by the president’s mass deportation raids.

The Department of Labor’s newly-created Office of Immigration Policy will help fast track visas for foreign laborers — but the administration has made it clear that the initiative is “not amnesty” for illegal migrant workers, a senior administration official told Axios.

“This is not amnesty. It’s not amnesty lite,” the official told the publication. “No one who is illegally here is being given a pathway to citizenship or residency.”

Migrants who are in the US illegally will not be eligible for the visa program and would-be foreign workers must apply from their home country before coming to the US legally

The Office of Immigration Policy will attempt to cut through regulations the Labor Department argues the Biden administration used as incentives for employers to hire illegal immigrants.

It’s unclear how the Trump administration intends to expedite the visas for migrant workers.

To hire foreign, seasonal agricultural workers via H-2A visas, farmers must show that there’s a lack of qualified local employees to fill the roles, according to the Department of Labor.

President Trump last month halted ICE raids at farms, hotels and restaurants after industry leaders raised some issues stemming from the administration’s immigration crackdown.

It’s always been that way going back to the Brassero Program. It worked up until ‘64. Then Ted Kennedy came along in ‘65.

Trump was always ok with farm workers who would go home when the harvest was over. Hotel workers are ok as the labor market demands.

By ‘being open’ to the not-so-new realities Trump is throwing a bone to his critics-one at a time.

Plenty of able-bodied Americans (many on one form of public assistance or another) are available.

Draft, I mean, recruit them into a 21st century Civilian Conservation Corps and assign them to agribusiness for labor.

“Migrants who are in the US illegally will not be eligible for the visa program and would-be foreign workers must apply from their home country before coming to the US legally.”

I agree with you - EVERY other country makes its guest workers apply from their home country, and it makes sense because the US Embassy in San Salvador, for example, will be FAR BETTER at verifying the backgrounds of those applying than an overworked State Department in DC.

As to Americans doing the grunt work, unless we find a way to make young Americans APPRECIATE work, particularly work that gets their hands dirty, we’ll have to bring them in from other countries.

They used to have “green cards” back in the day for these seasonal farm workers. Somebody must have changed the system along the way. Looks like Trump is going to reinstate the old policy with a certain type of Visa.

No. Mechanization the right way to do it, not slaves.

The tech is already here. It's just slaves are cheaper (even if they're actually far more expensive).

When I was a kid. I picked blueberries for money in WA state.
Along side men and women with work visas.
They kicked my ass production wise, but
the farmer got his crop in and everybody was happy.
I got enough money to spend a good summer.
They got enough money to live fairly well till next season.
What changed?
Democrat politics. destroyed it all.

"The Department of Labor’s newly-created Office of Immigration Policy will help fast track visas for foreign laborers..."

Yeah, I can't see that being misused and abused.

“that their labor force is being threatened “

if their labor force is largely illegal it should be threatened by laws, so should the employers.

Trump should NOT make it easy for them to continue breaking the law, and the illegals to stay here illegally just to work.

We sure need those “weed farmers” and unaccompanied toddlers to grow that stuff. Without them, we’d have to grow our own weed.

If they are allowed to stay when they are supposed to go, it is amnesty.

Plain and simple.

And the Dems would surely boost it to citizenship not to far down the road.

Shame on Trump.
