Widespread, abrupt terminations have left Justice Department and FBI employees wondering if they will be next, people familiar with the matter say.
The Trump administration is firing and pushing out employees across the Justice Department and FBI, often with no explanation or warning, creating rampant speculation and fear within the workforce over who might be terminated next, according to multiple people with knowledge of the removals who spoke on the condition of anonymity to avoid retribution.
Some people are simply fired, delivered a notice signed by Attorney General Pam Bondi that cites the broad powers afforded to the president in the U.S. Constitution. Others, particularly at the FBI, are told they can leave or be demoted or terminated.
The removals appear more individually targeted — and are happening in smaller numbers — than the high-profile ousters of senior Justice Department and FBI officials in the early months of President Donald Trump’s second term, when he vowed to clean house at the department that had brought two criminal cases against him. They are unrelated to the mass reductions-in-force and reorganizations that Trump has launched at many other federal agencies, which the Supreme Court has said may move forward for now.
Multiple people familiar with the Justice Department said scores of experienced staffers are opting to voluntarily leave the government to avoid being fired at random or asked to do things that would potentially violate their legal ethics. Their departures are worsening staff shortages in major divisions and U.S. attorney offices, and have created an opening for the Trump administration to further shape the department workforce, allowing officials to fill career staff vacancies with lawyers who align ideologically with the president.
“Many, many lawyers have resigned on their own power because they saw the writing on the wall,” said Max Stier, chief executive...

Welcome to the real world the rest of us live in.
“Firings without explanations” sounds like an admission of denial.
Boo hoo. The rest of us face termination at any moment, no reason required. It’s life. Deal with it.
And?
Ah, the ever faithful EPU pushing upon FR readers the Leftist propaganda press.
When I’ve fired people, they knew why they were getting fired.
When I laid people off (RIF), they knew why they were getting laid off.
These people are drama queens and they are likely all worthy of getting the boot.
Don’t let the door hit you on the way out!
Like the replies above imply, this is the real world, but the WaPo says it like it’s a bad thing.
I persoanlly gave a reason (even if it was mindless pablum) to employees I fired over the years. But in these particular Fed cases, silence is perfect.
Finally some good news from the swamp.
“We are reducing our size based on our needs and requirements.”
“We have budget issues and we are reducing staff.”
I also am glad its creating fear amongst these people.
Bingo. You get to keep your job. Seriously, real world is the best experience, especially getting canned. Teaches you to better live below your means (and save for those rainy days that will come), watch for the warning signs of company troubles (sooner or later for most companies), bosses come and go; most mediocre, some really bad, and literally a handful (five or less) in a lifetime that are really good. Lastly, don’t try to make real friends at work, they’re not there. Your associates are your competition. Period. My two cents.
Sad to say, if in the past they had applied the law equally, they wouldn’t have a job. The WP doesn’t tell us that.
Don’t sit there in fear, take action ... quit and beat them to the punch. That will show them.
You’re fired. Don’t leave town.
Either they know why they’re getting fired, or they’re too unaware to know why and should be fired for that.
Good.
Another day, another legacy media hit piece. In other news, it is early winter in Antarctica. The sun will set in the west tonight.
“’Many, many lawyers have resigned on their own power because they saw the writing on the wall,’ said Max Stier. . .”
Same source who promoted hit pieces on Kavanaugh—wife is an Obama-appointed judge.
