Carney’s dire record at the Bank of England is a warning to Canada

He has no experience of elective office. He won by the narrowest of margins, and hasn’t even spent much of his recent career in his own country. Canadians took a huge leap of faith yesterday in voting for Mark Carney as their next prime minister at a moment in their history when the American president Donald Trump has imposed huge tariffs on their country and even threatened to annex it.

Still, at least they can reassure themselves that Carney’s vast experience as Governor of the Bank of England means he is a safe pair of hands.

But there is one catch: Carney was a terrible Governor – and will prove to be a terrible prime minister as well.

When he was installed as Governor by the then Conservative Chancellor George Osborne in 2013, Carney was described as a rockstar central banker, the most brilliant financial mind of his generation, and someone who could bring some intellectual fireworks to economic policy.

And yet for all the hype, and the huge salary and expenses he was awarded, the reality turned out to be dire.

There were four big problems with the way Carney ran the Bank. To start with, he printed way too much money, first in response to the financial crisis, and then to our departure from the EU. The result? The UK suffered from a spike in inflation that was way above the rest of our competitors.

Next, he lost control of regulation, allowing pension funds to invest far too much money into high-risk assets, paving the way for the LDI blow-up that helped end the premiership of the unfortunate Liz Truss.
