WW3 map shows the safest countries to flee to in the event of a nuclear war as world tensions rise
Irish Star ^ | June 24, 2025 | John O'sullivan & Jack Hobbs

As the specter of another World War looms large, people worldwide are pondering potential safe havens should Russia escalate from nuclear warfare threats to actual missile launches. This comes in the wake of Iran and trading missile strikes as the tensions in the Middle East threaten to boil over into all-out war.

Russia and China backing Iran diplomatically or militarily—and the U.S. aligning with Israel—raise the specter of a proxy world war. The rapid escalation—from Iran-Israel missile exchanges to U.S. strikes and Iranian counterstrikes—fuels real anxiety about a broader war. Experts warn that any step into nuclear territory or deeper global involvement could trigger WWIII.

Still, there remains a glimmer of hope. Although it’s probable that any hostile factions would focus on major population hubs like London or New York, there are still locations that could offer refuge for those trapped in the conflict between Putin and his adversaries. It comes as new dementia fears were raised about Donald Trump after viewers spotted a mysterious clue in his suit.

The safest countries to flee to in the event of a nuclear war...

ANTARCTICA

If you're considering escaping to Antarctica in the event of a nuclear war, don't forget your winter coat. The map's creators suggest that this icy wilderness could be one of the safest havens due to its remote location at the Earth's southernmost point, making it strategically insignificant.

Moreover, with 5.4 million square miles of untouched land, Antarctica could comfortably shelter thousands of refugees from the war.

ICELAND

Another potential sanctuary from a possible war is Iceland, nestled far up north. Known as one of the most peaceful nations globally, it has reportedly never engaged in any war or invasion.

The Icelandic government has also reportedly inked a bilateral agreement with Ukraine, though its support is confined to funding and minimal transportation. While the island should evade the worst impacts of a European nuclear war, fallout from widespread nuclear strikes on the mainland could potentially reach its shores in small quantities.

NEW ZEALAND

Those seeking refuge from Putin's potential nuclear war might find safe haven down under. According to the Global Peace Index, New Zealand ranks second and has maintained a neutral position in most conflicts.

Another notable feature of the country is its extremely mountainous terrain, providing a natural defense against potential invasions. The Kiwi government has shown support for Ukraine, both financially and in actions against Russia at the International Court of Justice.

However, Metro suggests that it's unlikely this nation would face an attack.

SWITZERLAND

Switzerland, often synonymous with peace, naturally makes the list of countries likely to survive a nuclear war. Having maintained neutrality since World War Two, the country's landscape provides a sense of protection from various threats.

Beyond its geography, Switzerland also has a significant number of nuclear fallout shelters. The country hasn't offered aid to either Russia or Ukraine, making it less likely to be seen as a threat by Putin.

Some have accused Switzerland of favoring Russia, as the Swiss government has blocked the delivery of Swiss-made weapons and ammo purchased by other European countries.

GREENLAND

Greenland, the world's largest island owned by Denmark, is unlikely to ever be a real target of any global superpower. Its remote location, political neutrality, and small population of 56,000 people add to its safety.

INDONESIA

Indonesia, another small nation, has declared its intention to remain neutral in any conflict. The country's first president, Achmed Sukarno, described Indonesia's foreign policy as "free and active."

Officials have stated that they act independently within international affairs, with their primary concern being world peace.

TUVALU

Situated halfway between Hawaii and Australia, the island of Tuvalu is home to a mere 11,000 people. Given its weak infrastructure and limited natural resources, it's an unlikely target for any aggressors, according to reports.

ARGENTINA

Despite having been involved in conflicts in the past - notably the Falklands War in 1982 - Argentina is well-positioned to survive a famine that could follow a nuclear conflict. The South American country reportedly has an abundance of crops available, ensuring a substantial reserve should the sun be obscured by nuclear particles.

BHUTAN

Since joining the United Nations in 1971, the South Asian country of Bhutan has declared itself neutral in any potential conflicts. Its landlocked status and mountainous terrain make it easier to defend.

CHILE

The vast South American nation of Chile, stretching over 4,000 miles, could serve as a bridge between Moscow and Madrid. The country boasts a diverse range of crops and natural resources that would ease survival efforts.

Plus, Chile's infrastructure is considered the most advanced in all of South America.

FIJI

Next up is the island nation of Fiji. This remote paradise is reportedly 2,700 miles away from its nearest neighbor, Australia.

With strategic significance, an army of 6,000, and a high ranking on the Global Peace Index, Fiji is a strong contender. The island also offers dense forests, mineral deposits, and abundant fishing spots.

SOUTH AFRICA

Last but not least on the list of potential World War Three havens is South Africa. The country is rich in food sources, fertile land, and freshwater, making survival more manageable.

Additionally, South Africa's modern infrastructure could further enhance survival chances by efficiently managing these resources.

I thought I would post this based on its sheer idiocy making it actually hilarious. Apparently this article is not an anomaly, if you take a look at the home page. It clearly leans left. The Irish Star has the feel of one of those supermarket tabloids.

I came across this article because MSN.com has reproduced it and it pops up on the Bing start page, which tells you something about MSN/Bing.

Too funny. Maybe it was written when South Africa was CIVILIZED (meaning over 30 years ago), but no way is that a safe country, even in peacetime.

I was thinking Mauritius would be enough out of the way, and not worth bothering with for a while.

Of course, the U.S. is a big place, and so is Canada. If you can get fuel being able to move to remote locations (not near NORAD) might be a good strategy. Or, you live your life, help when you can, how you can, knowing that your number can come up.

“As the specter of another World War looms large...”

Oh good grief....apparently this ww3 insanity is spreading.

Marjorie Taylor Greene said the same thing in an unhinged rate about President Trump.

“Only 6 months in and we are back into foreign wars, regime change, and world war 3,” she said.”

Despite the huge migratory pressures of recent years, fleeing is really not an option for most of the world’s population. Flight is as likely to land the individual in a MORE precarious position than simply remaining in place and taking your chances by preparation. For one thing, the channels appropriate for migration may clog up pretty rapidly, and the sheer crush makes flight impossible. Further, there may not be any resources left once arriving at the proposed refuge. If you stay home, you are for sure going to have to fend off those who are predatory by nature, or failed to make their own preparations.

There are no good choices, only some that are a little less bad than others. Lotteries may be attractive to many, but the circle of winners remains very small. And sometimes the lottery rolls over several times before there is a payout.

“...which tells you something about MSN/Bing.”

It tells more than that. If the actual conflict starts and goes nuclear, they will not be throwing rocks at each other. The sides will throw enough ICBM’s with multi warheads to make it an earth changing event. And there will be no safe country from the aftermath. But they think they can go down fighting and do it with the same old gloom and doom they’ve been spewing for years. They may not see the fireball, but they will feel the heat of it down the road.

The Swiss are prepared and it is an armed nation of highly intelligent and orderly people, with great geography, I wonder if the rich buying in New Zealand, or Greenland, etc. realize how vulnerable those little weak nations are in the ability to protect their nation from outside forces seeing New Zealand as a nice place to take over, or from organized interior dark forces, do they have the institutional depth and martial will in their population to maintain order against all challenges, the Swiss do, and in a less perfect way, Americans do, core America likes order and fighting is still in its blood.

A small weak place might be more delicate than say, America, and more open to total chaos and total lack of authority, New Zealand may actually be more likely to end up a Road Warrior nation than Texas and the U.S., especially over time.

I’m not so sure I would prefer to face a new post apocalyptic world in South Africa or Latin America, or new Zealand, than in America.

I would be interested in seeing a map of the relative safety of areas in the United States, for those nomads that don't want to leave the CONUS. Right now, I'm looking at the areas most at risk being the Blue Cities on the two coasts, and large military bases between the Mississippi River and Pacific Ocean. It would be interesting to re-visit the maps from the Cold War days, too.

Some of these are completely idiotic.

ANTARCTICA - other than it being cold as hell and you needing a constant lifeline of support for everything from somewhere else for your survival.....

ICELAND - peaceful civilized country far from everywhere else that is unlikely to get nuked but....what are you going to eat? Iceland can't feed itself.

NEW ZEALAND - this is actually a good choice. Civilized western country far from everywhere else, unlikely to get nuked and they can actually feed themselves

SWITZERLAND - a civilized western country unlikely to get nuked but they have started to let too many muslims in and Switzerland can't feed itself.

GREENLAND - relatively civilized country far from everywhere else and unlikely to get nuked but very small population, bleak, cold as hell, would struggle mightily to feed itself and stay warm in winter without outside support.

INDONESIA - Indonesia has the 4th largest population on earth, has a muslim majority though they don't seem to be quite as extreme as others and is unlikely to get nuked. They might even still produce enough oil to meet their own needs but they can't feed themselves.

TUVALU - formerly part of the British empire it is relatively civilized, far from everywhere else and unlikely to get nuked but they can't feed themselves.

ARGENTINA - this and New Zealand are probably the best choices. It is a civilized country, does not have a lot of violence or instability and is a major food exporter. Nobody is going to nuke them. They'd need some oil imports but they have food to trade so they'll be fine.

BHUTAN - teeny tiny little country that can't feed itself. Yes they won't get nuked, they'll just starve.

CHILE - another excellent choice. This is a civilized country not likely to get nuked that is a food exporter. They also have some mineral resources such as an abundance of copper and lithium.

FIJI - civilized, unlikely to get nuked. Gorgeous place that can't feed itself. So you can starve to death in a beautiful location.

SOUTH AFRICA - only if you have a death wish. Without outside pressure, they'd slaughter their White population - or at least the White Farmers. Once they do that, like Zimbabwe, what was a food exporter would rapidly become a country that can't feed itself. That is if you weren't murdered for being White or just for being there first. Completely laughable anybody would even suggest this.

I have mansion sized yurts in New Zealand and Greenland. So when the SHTF I have two options. Greenland looks better with very friendly Eskimos and lots of excellent hunting. Whale meat yum!

Clearly a lot of people do not realize how much of the world is fed by a few massive breadbaskets like America, Ukraine, Russia, to a lesser extent Canada, Australia, Argentina, etc. Lots and LOTS of countries would experience mass starvation and death if world trade broke down. That covers just about the entire middle east, most islands with their current population, China, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Nigeria, Egypt, etc. The latter cannot feed themselves.
