Iran holds world hostage: Iranian government poised to SHUT Strait of Hormuz closing off 20 per cent of global oil and gas

Iranian parliament has approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in a move which could see the world thrown into disaster.

The decision to close the Strait, through which around 20 per cent of global oil and gas demand flows, is not yet final.

Iran's Supreme National Security Council must still make the final call on the matter, Iran's Press TV said today.

But lawmaker and Revolutionary Guards Commander Esmail Kosari told the Young Journalist Club that doing so is on the agenda and 'will be done whenever necessary'.

Last weekend, Kowsari told local media that closing the Strait of Hormuz 'is under consideration, and Iran will make the best decision with determination'.

The Strait is a pivotal trade route for the world, with around a fifth of the world's oil flowing through the tiny sea passage, along with the same proportion of all Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), making it the 'world's most important oil transit chokepoint'.

But Kowsari said Iran was not limiting its options in dealing with Israel, telling local media last week: 'Our hands are wide open when it comes to punishing the enemy, and the military response was only part of our overall response.'

Trade Gerrit Heinemann told Bild that should Iran choose to close the Strait, which borders the country, the results would be 'catastrophic.'

Let's see how quickly it re-opens once they close it. "Either re-open the strait or the Kharg Island terminal implodes" should be the only words exchanged.

'Iranian parliament has approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz in a move which could see the world thrown into disaster. '

Interesting display of 'democracy' by voting on such actions, instead of having a supreme ruler decide.

Wait, you actually believe Iranian Parliament is actually independent of the mullahs/ayatollahs?

Hahaha!

Probably a bluff, especially since they now see that Trump is not someone who can be threatened without him striking.

How will they close it? Mines? (They will be swept away in short order.). Missiles (Short range launchers will be destroyed by drones loitering overhead.). Sinking ships? The straits are not THAT narrow.

I would imagine any “action” would be met by a disproportionate reaction.

Strategically speaking, Russia really has nothing to offer Iran. China is their only major “ally.” China is not going to be happy with a reduction in oil supply. Their economy is staggering lately. Price increases of 25% or so in oil prices would gum up their works.

The best result for Iran would be to stop. They can retain their government. Negotiate an end to sanctions. They can use the oil money to rebuild their infrastructure. They would be able to continue sending their terror around the Middle East—just not nuclear threats.

It would mean losing face a bit. But in the end, warring groups in the Middle East are all about bluster and declaring victory. I don’t think Iran is thinking about national suicide. As much as they want the Mahdi to climb out of the well…I don’t think its time for them yet.

Who would it hurt the most if Hormuz was closed?

From various scuttlebutt online, the reactions of military that will be tasked to close the Strait range from unenthusiastic to mutinous. Cracks are beginning to appear.

What a gift to the USA with Biden’s oilfield shut down being lifted and all our oil starting to flow.

Chokepoint is the right term...

If Iran shuts Hormuz, they shut off all their export revenue, which they desperately need.

They also hurt the Emirates, who have generally been on their side, particularly with Qatar, who has supported Hamas (and which ironically also hosts a US military base)

So it probably won’t happen.

Before people start hyperventilating too much, here is some context:

90% of Iranian oil via the Strait of Hormuz goes directly to Communist China. The Communists need to tread carefully.

This salient fact is not lost on the Communists, the Russians, the Iranians, or the Trump Administration. Everyone is cognizant. Closing down the Strait of Hormuz as they (and their allies in this country and around the world are nearly slaveringly breathless in their mouthing of this threat) like to constantly threaten has problems associated with it.

In 2025, oil shipped via the Strait of Hormuz accounts for 7% of our total oil imports (not 7% of our oil used in total, but 7% of all IMPORTS. Important distinction.

We import 10 million barrels of oil a day in the USA, and about half a million barrels of that oil comes from countries that ship it to us via the Strait of Hormuz.

For the USA, we are a bit player in that region now. The biggest are:

Saudi Arabia would not be happy if the Iranians shut down the Strait of Hormuz.

Then again, if the Iranian government shuts it down, they would cut their own throat. Part of me wishes they would. Imagine a world without Iran. (except for the Pistachios, of course)
